At the Kiriakis mansion, Sarah admired Holly’s purchases for the back-to-school shopping spree Maggie had gifted her. Holly revealed she’d be living in the dorms with Arianna, and she had no regrets about her decision to attend college in Salem and stay close with her family, friends, and with Tate. When Holly turned the subject to Xander, Sarah reflected on how quickly her and Xander’s relationship had changed. She advised Holly to be prepared if something similar happened with Tate. Holly wondered why Sarah seemed to be indicating Tate and Holly’s relationship could be in trouble.

Sarah said when she’d talked with Sophia, she had gotten the impression that the other girl wasn’t over Tate. Holly agreed but brushed off Sophia and Tate’s previous relationship as a one-time fling. Sarah added that having a baby together could bond people in unexpected ways, then apologized for “projecting” her issues with Xander onto Holly and Tate. Holly appreciated Sarah’s concern, but she didn’t believe Sophia would be an issue anymore since the baby wasn’t even in Salem. Sarah tensed at the response.

At Marlena’s place, Brady and Tate arrived, with Rachel’s snake in tow. They found Rachel sitting sullenly on the couch and tried to cheer her up, to no avail. “I just want my mom,” Rachel said. Brady gently suggested Rachel find a sunny place for her snake in her bedroom. Rachel glumly followed the suggestion, leaving Brady and Tate to discuss Kristen’s upcoming sentencing hearing.

Tate couldn’t understand why Kristen had pled guilty and refused a lawyer, but an angry Brady declared himself done with trying to figure his ex out. Brady mentioned the losses and hardships the family had endured recently, and he assured Tate he was there if Tate needed to talk. Tate wanted to move on with his life following the adoption, and he got irritated when Brady kept pressing the issue of the adoptive parents’ refusal to let him see the baby. Brady agreed to change the subject, but first he requested the name of Sophia’s attorney who had handled the adoption. Brady claimed someone at work wanted a good lawyer, so Tate offered to send information about the attorney to Brady’s phone.

Later, after Brady and Rachel had left, Holly showed up. Following a brief chat about Rachel’s snake, Holly suggestively asked Tate if they had the place to themselves. Tate reminded her about the previous embarrassment with Belle, and Holly agreed they shouldn’t “tempt fate.” The teens did share a kiss, though, which was unceremoniously interrupted by Rachel’s snake. Tate managed to wrangle the escaped reptile back into its cage, and Holly and he decided to make their own getaway to the pub.

At Stephanie’s apartment, Alex brightened Stephanie’s morning with the news that she was a hit with readers and reviewers of One Stormy Night. Alex presented a beaming Stephanie with a “surprise” bonus: a new phone, which would only be used for her to communicate via text as “Anastasia Sands.” Stephanie was excited by her new “secret identity.”

At the Brady Pub, Steve teased Kayla by revealing he had solved his case…but he couldn’t tell her about it. They engaged in light-hearted banter about Kayla’s “payment” for her assistance. The conversation grew more tense after Kayla found out that Stephanie had asked Steve to drop the case. She worried her daughter was in over her head, but Steve pledged that Stephanie had it under control.

Sophia, who had secured a job as a waitress, walked up to take Steve and Kayla’s order. Kayla asked how she was doing. Sophia replied she was better since the adoption had happened, then she hurried off. Later, Alex and Stephanie joined Steve and Kayla for breakfast. Stephanie chided Steve about his enthusiastic consumption of pigs in a blanket before joking that they should rename the dish “Alex in a toga.” The two couples shared a laugh at Alex’s collegiate toga tale.

Kayla congratulated Alex on his success with One Stormy Night and gushed about how many patients she had seen reading the book. When Steve brought up reading the book himself, Stephanie was quick to say it wasn’t her dad’s type of book. Alex offered to get Kayla a signed copy from the author, which earned him a side-eye from Stephanie.

After they finished their meal, Steve and Alex said their goodbyes to Kayla and Stephanie and left for work. When mother and daughter were alone, Kayla asked about Stephanie’s job at the hospital; the topic elicited a sigh of frustration from Stephanie. She noted the uptick of complaints from both patients and staff following EJ’s cuts. Some of the blowback had fallen on Stephanie, as some people were beginning to accuse her of being EJ’s paid “cheerleader.” Kayla suggested Stephanie quit, but Stephanie refused to give up on making the job work.

Kayla was surprised when Stephanie changed the subject to ricin poisoning. Stephanie claimed she had a novelist client who had been musing about methods for the perfect murder. Kayla confirmed ricin poison was usually untraceable. She suddenly had an idea that she presented to her daughter: Stephanie should use Alex’s connections to acquire Anastasia Sands as a client. Stephanie offered a strained smile at the suggestion.

Outside the pub, Tate and Holly saw Sophia in her waitress uniform. Sophia happily greeted them and confirmed she had been hired at the pub. When Tate questioned if Sophia had gotten the job because he would be working there, Sophia feigned shock and claimed her mother had been pushing her to get a job since she had quit waitressing at The Bistro. Holly was visibly not enthused by the development.

In Horton Town Square, Brady continued his unsuccessful attempts to lift Rachel’s spirits. When father and daughter ran into Sarah, Rachel told Sarah how much she missed her mom and cried in Sarah’s arms after Sarah gave a comforting hug. Sarah invited Rachel to the bookstore, but Brady informed Sarah that they were going to the pet shop to get mice for Rachel’s pet snake. Sarah quickly recovered from her surprise about the snake and suggested she, Brady, and Rachel make good on the dinner they had planned soon. After Sarah said being with Rachel would cheer her up, Rachel concurred: “It’ll cheer me up spending time with you, too.”

Later, Alex approached Sarah and checked in on how she had been doing since the separation from Xander. Sarah conceded it had been hard and asked how things were at work with Xander. Alex said his cousin was getting along okay, but that he clearly missed Sarah. She admitted the feeling was mutual, but after everything that had happened, she had to move on from Xander. Alex understood and wished Sarah well.

In Steve’s office, Steve received a visit from Brady. The men briefly talked about Kristen and Rachel. When Brady lamented how his dad could have helped Rachel, Steve and he reminisced about John. Brady eventually announced the reason for his visit: he wanted Steve’s help with an investigation. After Brady hinted at suspicions regarding Sophia and the adoption, Steve instructed Brady to tell him everything.
