What Happened on Days of our Lives

At Rafe’s house, Rafe arrived and filled a nervous Gabi in on his conversation with Johnny. Rafe relayed that Johnny had denied shooting EJ. Gabi wasn’t sure she believed Johnny, and she didn’t think the police would either. Rafe reasoned Johnny had an opportunity to turn himself into custody, which would give him a better chance. Gabi hoped Rafe’s plan worked, both for Johnny’s sake and for her own as well.
Gabi fretted EJ would want to take vengeance on her for helping send his son to prison. Rafe got a call from Jada and left in a huff after learning that Johnny had already been arrested.
Later, Gabi tried to call Will to tell him about his brother’s arrest. Arianna came downstairs, and Gabi updated her on the arrest. Arianna didn’t believe Johnny was capable of the crime, and she wondered if Gabi and she could do anything to help. Gabi could only hug her daughter in comfort. They agreed Will would be upset when he found out about Johnny.
Arianna admitted it had been nice to have her dad in town. Will had mailed Arianna her high school diploma, which Arianna showed to an excited Gabi. Arianna resisted her mom’s attempts to make a big deal out of the graduation, but she eventually acquiesced and agreed to pose for a photo with the diploma. When Rafe came back home, Arianna made her escape.
Gabi asked what had happened at the station, and Rafe complained more about the arrest. Gabi was none too pleased either because EJ would be out for her blood if she testified against Johnny.
At the Brady Pub, Roman wasn’t buying Marlena’s excuse that she had stopped by to eat chowder. Marlena admitted she was worried about Johnny. Roman informed her that Carrie had suggested Johnny turn himself in to the cops. Despite Roman’s insistence that they trust the system, Marlena was convinced Johnny could be wrongly convicted. She used Gabi as an example.
Marlena apologized to Roman for “falling apart” earlier in his room. Roman assured her she had nothing to be sorry for, and Kate completely understood his and Marlena’s mutual concern about Johnny. Marlena’s demeanor went from bad to worse, though, when she read a text from Belle revealing Johnny had been arrested. Marlena wanted to go to the station immediately, but Roman compelled her to stay until they could actually see Johnny.
Marlena couldn’t understand how the arrest had come about, as she didn’t believe Johnny had disregarded Roman’s advice about securing an attorney before going to the police. Roman feared the cops had new evidence against their grandson.
Marlena tried to contact Brady so she could warn him about Rachel potentially needing to testify. Roman was worried for Rachel, too. Marlena realized Roman himself could be in trouble for hiding the gun. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing anyone else. Roman announced he only had one course of action: turn in the gun.
In Horton Town Square, Jada read Johnny his rights as her officer cuffed him. EJ urged Jada not to arrest Johnny, to no avail. A confused Chanel arrived on the scene and demanded to know what was happening. When Johny said he was being arrested for attempted murder, Chanel began to ask about the alleged victim but then looked at EJ. “Oh, my God,” she gasped.
Chanel asked Johnny if he’d shot his father, and Johnny again claimed his innocence. EJ advised Johnny to keep quiet and turned to level a threat at Jada: if she took his son into custody, he’d drag her “to hell and back.” Jada didn’t take kindly to the threat, so EJ backed off and explained that he’d supposedly acquired a memory about Johnny having a gun that night but handing it over to EJ. Jada considered the sudden memory “convenient” and challenged that even it was true, Johnny could have come back later, during EJ’s memory lapse. She suggested EJ get Johnny a good lawyer and took Johnny away.
EJ attempted to follow his son, but Chanel stopped him and commanded EJ to tell her the whole chain of events. EJ relented and quickly summarized how Johnny had visited him the night of the shooting. Although EJ had originally thought Johnny had shot him, Johnny had refuted it, and EJ believed his son’s version of events. He blamed “that idiot Rafe Hernandez” for getting Johnny arrested.
At the police station, Belle angrily confronted Paulina about forcing her hand in arresting Johnny. Paulina defended her choice, reminding Belle that if they didn’t treat Johnny the same as any other suspect they would both be accused of giving him special treatment. Belle worried that Johnny wasn’t prepared for what was coming his way. She wished, as did Paulina, that they could have given all the involved parties a “heads-up.” Paulina reaffirmed they needed to keep everything above-board to give Johnny the best shot at a scandal-free acquittal.
When Paulina expressed doubt about Johnny’s innocence, Belle firmly stated she believed Johnny. Paulina wanted to believe her son-in-law as well, but she recalled how “cold-blooded” he had acted when he’d first gotten the news about EJ’s shooting. She received a text from Jada about Johnny’s arrest. Belle was not happy but understood when Paulina removed her from the case. Paulina cautioned Belle not to have any involvement in the proceedings.
Later, Johnny was brought into the station by Jada. Rafe soon followed, and he immediately took responsibility. Glaring at the police commissioner, he said, “I thought Jada could be trusted to handle this.” Jada warned Rafe to stay out of it and instructed her officer to take Johnny for processing. Before Johnny left, EJ and Chanel arrived. EJ announced he would be acting as Johnny’s lawyer, then turned his ire to Belle and asked how she could have let the arrest happen.
Chanel pleaded for a moment with Johnny, and Jada reluctantly granted it. Chanel took Johnny aside and pledged that she believed him and loved him. He smiled in gratitude as the officer took him for booking. Paulina comforted a distraught Chanel. After Chanel learned Paulina had given the order for Johnny’s arrest, however, she proclaimed she couldn’t look at her mother and stormed off.
Belle and EJ made their way to Horton Town Square, and Belle tried to explain her predicament to EJ. He demanded she drop the charges, but she argued that she’d been recused from the case. EJ insisted he had a way to get her back on the case. When they both calmed down, Belle apologized for Johnny’s arrest, and EJ apologized for taking his frustrations out on Belle. She was shocked to learn that EJ had gone for weeks believing Johnny had shot him; EJ emphasized he believed his son’s story.
Later, EJ made a call to a judge and requested a meeting. Across the square, Belle met with Marlena, and mother and daughter commiserated about the latest developments. They both wanted to help Johnny any way they could.
Back at the station, Johnny was fingerprinted and photographed.
Meanwhile, Rafe blasted Jada for arresting Johnny without giving Rafe a chance to convince Johnny to turn himself in. Jada accused Rafe of being a “huge hypocrite,” since he’d felt obligated to report Johnny but had not expected Jada to do the same. Rafe implied Jada was just gunning for a big conviction and took a shot at her for taking his job. Jada shot back that if Rafe had been equally concerned with solving cases, he might still have his job. She blew off his "temper tantrum" and “kindly” suggested he get out of her face and let her do her job.
Paulina came into Jada’s office just as a seething Rafe left. She sympathized with Jada since Chanel had just read her the riot act as well. Both Paulina and Jada hoped that everyone would eventually understand they were just doing their jobs.
Paulina returned to the main station area just as Johnny was being taken to his cell. Chanel begged the officer for another private moment with her husband. Before the officer could reject Chanel’s pleas, Paulina demanded he let Chanel and Johnny talk briefly in the interrogation room. Chanel acknowledged her mom’s gesture before heading into the room.
Inside the interrogation room, Chanel questioned why Johnny hadn’t opened up to her about holding a gun on EJ. Johnny confessed he’d been ashamed. He worried his initial refusal to tell anyone what had really happened could lead to a conviction for a crime he didn’t commit. Chanel told Johnny not to blame himself. “Mama was the one who stabbed us in the back,” she declared.
Later, an officer accompanied Johnny down to the holding cells. Johnny sat glumly in his cell and reflected on all the times he’d wished EJ dead.
Back in the main room, Roman entered, holding a paper bag. When he handed the bag to Jada, she asked about its contents. Roman then stunned Jada and Paulina by revealing the bag contained the gun that had likely been used to shoot EJ.
