What Happened on Days of our Lives

At Alex and Stephanie’s apartment, Stephanie was stunned when she opened the door to her ex, Jeremy, who had a floral bouquet in his hand. Jeremy said he needed to speak with Stephanie face-to-face. He explained Julie had told him where Stephanie lived and that the flowers were a “peace offering.” When Jeremy asked for a few minutes of Stephanie’s time, she was standoffish and said no while throwing in a warning that her boyfriend would be home soon. After Jeremy added a “please” and promised he would leave when he’d said his piece, Stephanie reluctantly let him inside.
Jeremy congratulated Stephanie on the book and clarified he’d recognized the “sex in the cockpit” scene in the novel as referencing an encounter between Stephanie and him. While Stephanie denied the connection at first, she grudgingly admitted that she was “Anastasia” after Jeremy recounted personal details from the scene. He had assumed Stephanie was using him as inspiration for her character might mean he was still on her mind. Stephanie quickly disabused him of that notion and strongly stated she was in a serious relationship.
Jeremy backed off and said he understood. When Stephanie flinched as he approached, Jeremy said he deeply regretted the way he’d treated her during their relationship. He called himself a “fool” for destroying something that had been so important to him. Jeremy pledged that, while he was in town, he’d leave Stephanie alone and that “you live your life, and I’ll live mine.”
Stephanie responded that it’d be easy for Jeremy, since most of the town had no idea what he had done to her. She said she hadn’t told anyone not to protect him but out of shame. Jeremy stressed Stephanie should not feel shame because his actions were on him. He told her the story of how he’d turned his life around by turning himself in to authorities, working out a deal wherein the charges against him were dropped, beginning therapy, and doing volunteer work with children. During the volunteering, Jeremy had discovered he had a connection with kids and had worked toward his teaching certification. Stephanie was surprised to learn he’d be teaching at the elementary school.
Jeremy admitted it was an unexpected career change for him. He reaffirmed his commitment to becoming a better man and asked that Stephanie give him a chance to prove it. Jeremy then promised he wouldn’t out Stephanie as "Anastasia" and wished his ex well, leaving Stephanie to absorb his claims.
At the Brady Pub, Kayla filled Steve in on the results of Tesoro’s DNA test. Steve was frustrated because he had believed Brady had uncovered a promising lead, but Kayla affirmed that the results were solid. Jennifer arrived, interrupting the conversation, and shared a big hug with her old friend Kayla. The trio settled down for an interview Jennifer was doing with Kayla about the Dr. Tom Horton Free Clinic. Jennifer gushed about what an honor it was to write the piece commemorating her grandfather.
The chat took a turn, though, when Jennifer expressed her excitement about seeing her nephew Jeremy while she was in town. Kayla and Steve put aside their discomfort on the topic of Jeremy as the interview began. Kayla talked about the influence Tom had on her decision to work at the waterfront clinic and about his role as a mentor who had motivated her to pursue a medical career. She always felt him by her side and “prayed for his strength and guidance” during difficult times. At Jennifer’s request, Steve added his own warm words about Tom and sang Kayla’s praises for fulfilling Tom’s legacy as chief of staff.
As the interview wrapped up, Jennifer thanked Kayla and Steve, who assured their friend they loved talking about Tom. Jennifer’s demeanor soured when she mentioned going back to the house to see Chad. She admitted there had been friction between her and her son-in-law because of Cat. She vented about her suspicions that Chad and Cat were too close and also railed against the parole board, deciding to release Cat’s brother Mark. Jennifer grew irate when Kayla seemingly defended Cat by stating the woman was doing good work and was trying to “make amends.”
Jennifer’s anger only increased after Steve added that he, too, could and had crossed lines to protect his family against Clyde. Kayla gently reminded Jennifer that they had both loved and forgiven men with troubled and even violent pasts. Kayla also invoked the time when Abigail herself had been in a desperate state and had faked her death to spare her family pain. Jennifer argued that Abigail had been mentally ill at the time, unlike Cat. Kayla reiterated her belief that if Jennifer could extend forgiveness to Cat, it would help release Jennifer from her own pain and rage.
Later, Kayla stopped by Stephanie's apartment with food for her daughter. Kayla still couldn’t believe her daughter was the newest novelist sensation, but she reaffirmed her extreme pride. Stephanie, for her part, was mortified that her dad had read One Stormy Night. She was relieved when Kayla reassured her that Steve hadn’t and wouldn’t be told about Stephanie’s secret job.
Kayla cautiously brought up the subject of Jeremy’s return, which prompted Stephanie to confide in her mom about her tense reunion with her ex. Stephanie admitted she couldn’t be sure Jeremy was truly reformed. She was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because Kayla had taught her the importance of second chances. Kayla encouraged Stephanie to keep her guard up around Jeremy.
Back at the pub, Rafe met with Steve. Rafe told his former Black Patch boss that he was happy to help with Tesoro’s DNA test and that he was sorry the test hadn’t yielded answers for Brady. Rafe wondered if Tesoro was the reason for the latest meeting. Steve clarified that he wanted Rafe to look into someone else “on the down-low”…Jeremy Horton.
Prior to Rafe's meeting with Steve, Rafe held a meeting in his office with Cat. She informed him she had gotten information from her dinner with Gwen that might prove useful. Cat updated her partner on Gwen’s tense night trapped in an electronically secured room at the hospital. Both Cat and Rafe thought it strange and suspicious that EJ had seemingly left Gwen alone in what was supposed to be a highly secure facility. Cat theorized that the room could have had something to do with the city-wide blackout.
Rafe made a crack about EJ’s love for secret rooms and suggested Cat secure herself a tour of the facility. Cat was on the same page. Following a brief discussion about Rafe resuming Cat’s self-defense training, the talk turned to Cat’s subtle checking of her phone for messages. Cat confided that Chad and she were going “public” with their relationship. She nervously joked about Chad’s talk with his family ending in disaster as being the reason he hadn’t gotten back in touch.
Later, in Horton Town Square, Cat talked with Felicity about Mark’s impending release. Felicity said she felt guilty for leaving Cat alone during the blackout. With a sly smile, Cat admitted she hadn’t been alone. She added that Felicity had been right all along about Chad and her. Felicity exclaimed she’d known it and seemed very happy for her sister.
At the Horton House, Thomas confronted Chad about Cat. When Thomas demanded to know what had happened the previous night, Chad confessed that Cat and he had decided to tell their families that they “had feelings for each other.” Thomas accused Chad of lying to him since Thomas had asked about the relationship previously. Chad apologized and said he’d needed to be sure of how he felt. He quickly caught on to Thomas’s anger and questioned the reaction since Thomas had accepted Stephanie and had also expressed his fondness for Cat.
Thomas yelled that he didn’t like Cat anymore and that Stephanie “hadn’t lived at Nonno’s house pretending to be Mom!” Growing more emotional, Thomas challenged his dad on how Chad could have believed Cat was Abigail. Chad could only call the situation “complicated.” He confirmed for Thomas that Cat’s deception was the reason Thomas’ Grandma and Grandpa couldn’t forgive Cat. Thomas couldn’t understand why his dad had forgiven Cat and implored why Chad “wanted someone so mean to be your girlfriend.”
Chad again called the circumstances “complicated” but vowed that he didn't want any more secrets between him and Thomas. Thomas retorted, “She turned you into a liar, just like she is!” He shouted that he never wanted to listen to his dad again, just as a concerned Jennifer walked through the door. Thomas ran into his grandma’s arms while Jennifer shot a look at Chad and asked what had happened. Chad asked Jennifer to give him time alone with his son, but Thomas was having none of it and told his grandma exactly what was wrong: his dad was dating Cat Greene.
Jennifer angrily stated that her suspicions were confirmed. Chad made another request of Jennifer to let him talk to his boy. Thomas refused and raced upstairs. Jennifer immediately began berating Chad for allowing the “imposter” close to him and for traumatizing Thomas in the process. Chad hoped Thomas would eventually hear him out.
Jennifer let Chad know Thomas would never understand because Chad’s actions were “inexplicable.” Chad took the verbal hits, then asked Jennifer if she was done before going upstairs after Thomas. Jennifer stayed behind and stewed in her renewed rage.
