At the hospital, Brady talked to Sarah about her and Xander’s decision to go to couples therapy. Sarah admitted that it would be difficult to get past their trust issues, but that she was hopeful about her marriage. Brady’s phone beeped with a text that reconfirmed the test results for Tesoro.

Brady told Sarah about his theory that Tesoro was Sophia’s baby. Sarah noted that safe drop locations were a good thing, and Brady agreed. “My investigation has nothing to do with questioning [Sophia’s] decision. It has everything to do with finding out what happened to my grandchild,” Brady explained. Brady confirmed that the DNA test results confirmed Tesoro was not Tate’s baby. Sarah was surprised.

At Johnny and Chanel’s apartment, Johnny fretted to Chanel over why Holly had not returned his messages. “This doesn’t seem like her. So deluded. Spiteful. Honestly, I just thank god you believed in me,” Johnny said. “We’ve been through a whole lot together, and our love for each other it’s kept us strong,” Chanel said. With a sigh, Chanel worried aloud that the incident would ruin their chance to adopt Tesoro.

Holly and Ari were settling into their new dorm room, but Holly said she believed she would be expelled. Ari was upset, but Holly assured her that the only thing she liked about school was living with Ari. When Holly complained about Tate, Ari stressed that Holly could do better.

“Just look at how Tate has let you down over and over again. You are not the one who cheated,” Ari argued. “I know. But I really thought we were going to be able to work this out,” Holly said. As Ari urged Holly to give herself time to adjust to school, Holly’s new phone finished updating. Holly gasped.

“All my photos and texts are gone from the cloud! And why do I have all these new messages from Johnny DiMera?” Holly said. Holly called Johnny, and he asked Holly to meet with him and Chanel. “Is this about my paper?” Holly asked. Johnny insisted that he talk to Holly in person.

When Holly arrived at Johnny’s apartment, Johnny asked Holly how she was feeling. Holly admitted that she was ashamed about how she had caused the dorm fire. “You must know that the reason I asked you over here is because of those photos you sent me,” Johnny said. Confused, Holly asked what he was talking about.

“That’s how you want to play this?” Johnny said. Johnny demanded to see the photos on Holly’s phone, but she said there weren’t any on there. “This is a new phone. I lost my old one in the fire,” Holly said. Holly explained that all of her photos and texts were missing from the cloud. Johnny showed Holly the photo on his phone, and she gasped.

Holly stammered, “I have no memory of taking these, and I certainly don’t remember sending them to you.” Chanel asked Holly to confirm that it was her in the photos, and Holly admitted that it appeared to be her. “I don’t know, maybe I meant to send them to Tate,” Holly said. “So you’re claiming that this whole thing was an accident?” Chanel asked. With a shake of her head, Holly said she had never done anything like that before. Johnny told Holly that he wanted to believe her, but that it did not explain the letter.

“What letter?” Holly said. Johnny and Chanel told Holly about the letter that had been sent to the social worker handling Tesoro’s adoption. “Whoever wrote the letter knew that you had feelings for Johnny,” Chanel said. “But I don’t have feelings for Johnny,” Holly stressed. Chanel asked Holly about her last memory from the night of the fire. Holly recounted that after her call with Johnny, she had felt sick, taken a shower, and then she woke up in the hospital.

Overwhelmed, Holly said she needed to go. “I’m sorry to both of you, and I really hope you believe me,” Holly said as she ran out. Johnny and Chanel agreed that Holly had seemed genuinely shocked by the texted photos. Confused, Johnny wondered aloud how the person who sent the letter would believe that Johnny was having an affair with Holly.

“And how would that woman even know that we were hoping to adopt her baby?” Chanel asked. After a moment, Johnny pointed out that Holly had lost her phone in the fire. Chanel added that the photos had been sent while Holly had been in the hospital. “She couldn’t have sent those photos at all. So who did and why?” Johnny said.

Tate was exiting the Brady Pub when he saw Sophia sitting on the bench outside, scrolling on her phone. “Oh my god!” Sophia exclaimed. Tate asked what was wrong, and Sophia reluctantly told him that she had heard that Holly was dating Johnny. In disbelief, Tate noted that it did not make sense because Holly was over Johnny. Sophia suggested that Holly had become infatuated with Johnny because he was her college professor.

Tate suggested that the person who originated the rumor had been out to cause trouble. “Or maybe Holly made up the rumor herself just to make you jealous or to punish you,” Sophia suggested. Tate said no. “How do you think she found out that we kissed?” Tate asked. Sophia said it had not been her.

“Did you tell anyone else?” Tate asked. After a moment, Sophia mentioned that she had run into Ari when she had left Tate’s dorm. “I told her that nothing happened,” Sophia said. Tate guessed that Ari had assumed they had hooked up, and she had told Holly. “This is my own stupid fault,” Tate said. With a smirk, Sophia noted that Tate had only kissed her to get information.

“I’m not proud of that. I’m just trying to shake this feeling that there’s something you’re not telling me,” Tate said. Sophia asked Tate to let it go, but Tate continued to press. Sophia reminded Tate that through her efforts, she had made sure that their daughter would be raised in a loving home. Tate apologized, and he told Sophia that he believed her.

“I won’t ask you about the baby anymore. If you say she’s safe and in a happy home, then that’s good enough for me,” Tate said. As Tate put his hand on Sophia’s shoulder, Holly looked through the window of the pub. Upset, Holly called Nicole, and she asked to move to Paris. “I never want to come back to Salem ever again,” Holly said.

Down at the police station, JJ handed in his police shield to Jada. “I’m resigning from the force,” JJ said. JJ told Jada about his confrontation with Theo in the square during the blackout. When Jada chimed in with information about the incident, JJ asked how she had known about it.

“Theo came back to my office to pick up Paulina, and he told me something had happened in the square. He seemed pretty shaken up,” Jada said. “We both were. It felt so much like what happened last time,” JJ admitted. Jada asked JJ if he believed that he had acted inappropriately toward Theo during the blackout. “I want to say no, that I did everything by the book. But I don’t know,” JJ said. Jada mentioned that Theo had accused JJ of racial profiling.

“Would you have stopped him if he’d been white?” Jada asked. JJ confirmed he had stopped people of all races that night, and he believed he had treated each person in the same manner. “In your encounter with Theo, did you escalate the situation inappropriately?” Jada asked. JJ hesitated. When Jada asked JJ if he had drawn his weapon, JJ said no. Jada said it sounded like JJ had followed the rules.

“So why are you turning in your badge?” Jada asked. JJ said he had worked to make sure he never repeated his past mistakes. “After [the shooting] happened, I lost hope. Hated myself,” JJ said. “But you found your way out,” Jada said. JJ said that thanks to his friends and family, he had worked to be a better person. “Maybe Theo is right. Maybe I’m not fit to serve,” JJ said. Jada argued that JJ was a great cop.

“If you start second-guessing your instincts and doubting yourself, then you will be a liability,” Jada advised. Jada encouraged JJ to talk to the department therapist and take a few days off. Jada shoved the badge toward JJ, and she agreed to revisit the issue in a few days. JJ thanked Jada for believing in him.

In the square, Theo thought about his shooting. Abe clapped Theo on the shoulder and startled him. “Are you all right?” Abe asked. Theo admitted that he was struggling with the emotions of being back in Salem. Abe told Theo that he wanted him to be happy. Abe told Theo that Lexie would have been proud of Theo.

As Abe walked away, Theo noticed Ari struggling to carry a garbage bag, and he offered to help. Flustered, Ari thanked Theo. After Theo helped Ari drop the bag at the dry cleaners, she bought him a cup of coffee. Theo joked about the amount of laundry, and Ari told him about her dorm room fire.

“Why isn’t your roommate here helping you?” Theo asked. “She’s been dealing with a lot lately. So I didn’t want to like, you know, stress her out with anything else,” Ari said. Theo called Ari a good friend. The two chatted about how they had both returned to Salem after years away. After the coffee, Ari and Theo introduced themselves to one another before they parted ways.
