Fans of Days of Our Lives don’t know whether to be happy or sad. They’re bummed out that John was officially killed off, ended the era that was created when the legendary Drake Hogestyn took on the part in 1986. Sadly, the actor died in 2024, but the show shoots so far in advance that it took until May of 2025 for John’s story to come to an end. At the same time, Bo (Peter Reckell) came back from nearly dying of sepsis, and his wife Hope (Kristian Alfonso) was by his side to share her joy when he awoke. The actress recently talked about those scenes and what lies ahead in Salem.
It was bittersweet

Alfonso had been bumped from show regular to recurring status in 2020, often returning as the storylines needed it. She had a conversation with Soap Opera Digest about this most recent return and explained that coming back was very “difficult.” She remarked that, “My heart was so amazingly happy and heavy at the same time,” because the highly-anticipated reunion of Bo and Hope was overshadowed by the fact that Drake was fighting for his life.” The actor died of pancreatic cancer, leaving his castmates emotionally distraught.
The Days of Our Lives star noted that every time she returned, she brought a joyous attitude to work, together with her castmates, and created great scenes - something that Hogestyn would often do. And that attitude served them well because whenever she and Reckell make an appearance, they say to each other, “Is this not amazing? We’re here again! What a gift.”
Forward the future

While most story points and even casting changes are kept mum by the powers that be, Alfonso was able to give fans a hint of what’s coming next on Days of Our Lives. She explained, “It’s not just one event that takes place, it’s not just two events that take place, it’s many.” And between the flashbacks of John’s amazing time on the show, as well as Bo and Hope’s fabulous history, she noted that things are going to get exciting, as she will be revisiting many iconic past events.
She also enthusiastically shared that the coming stories “are going to pull at the heartstrings,” and advised the fans: “So have your tissues ready!” Already, fans have been in a funk watching John go out as a hero, and although Bo’s emergence from his coma is a good thing, her tease has us wondering what other major obstacles the couple will have to face.
