The return of Sami has been much needed on Days of Our Lives. Johnny DiMera learned the awful truth about what EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) had done to her, and the young man had trouble wrapping his brain around the fact that she not only loved EJ, but married him a couple of times. She finally came back to Salem and explained her point of view to her son, which hopefully has begun the healing process for both of them. Carson Boatman recently opened up about how the return of Sami is affecting Johnny.
They work off each others’ emotions

Boatman explained to Soap Opera Digest that Sami’s return and explanation about how she feels about everything has helped soothe Johnny, but didn’t make everything go away completely. He still wants nothing to do with EJ, despite seeing him in the hospital after being shot, and although he’s starting to lighten up a bit about things, he’s not going to let others be aware of that fact.
With the return of Sami, of course, comes the return of her portrayer, Alison Sweeney. Boatman gushed about getting to work with her again, noting that he’s always thrilled whenever she comes back to the show. “She’s such a great actor,” he explained, adding, “so it’s fun for both of us be able to kind of feed off each other’s emotions and just work together.”
The scene where the two have a long heart-to-heart about what really happened in Sami’s life and how she’s learned how to put her trauma in the past was heartbreaking. The acting of both Sweeney and Boatmen was exemplary and helped present the situation as realistically as possible.
His anger has lessened

For Boatman, Johnny’s animosity was tempered by the fact that Sami has made peace with everything she’s been through. “He knows that his mom hasn’t been [living with] some kind of emotionally agonizing pain over it for the last 20-odd years,” he remarked.
Johnny simply could not wrap his brain around things, and it took her to admit that somehow she fell in love with EJ to quell his anger. But Boatman explained that Johnny is also a little angry at her for keeping such a heinous secret from him for basically his whole life. In fact, Johnny is also upset at everyone in town who knew about what happened and agreed to keep quiet about it.
Clearly, what went down between EJ and Sami is not something that should have been told to Johnny at a young age, and none of the characters could justify a perfect moment when the time would have been right to inform him. (Find out Feuerriegel’s opinion about EJ’s shooting.)
