A24 confirms Alex Garland as writer-director of live-action 'Elden Ring' adaptation: All you need to know

A24, in partnership with Bandai Namco Entertainment, has announced that Alex Garland will write and direct a live-action film adaptation of the highly praised video game Elden Ring.

A report from Deadline reveals that Garland, known for his work on films like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, has already generated excitement among fans with this news. While Garland will handle the writing and directing, the film's production team includes George R.R. Martin, Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis.

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced the news to their fans and followers on Instagram on May 22, 2025. Here is what they wrote:

“We’re thrilled to announce that Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and A24 are teaming up with writer and director Alex Garland to bring FromSoftware Inc.’s world-renowned video game ELDEN RING to life as a live-action film. Elden Ring draws on a mythical narrative crafted by George R. R. Martin, known for the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. Created by Hidetaka Miyazaki of FromSoftware, the game is set in a genuine dark fantasy realm filled with dragons, beasts, castles, and dungeons, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The plot of Elden Ring unfolds in a mythical realm known as the Lands Between. The story focuses on the aftermath of the shattering of the Elden Ring, a powerful artifact. Its destruction brings chaos. The player's role is to restore the Elden Ring.

The original 2022 role-playing action video game was reportedly released in 2022 and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with Yui Tanimura serving as the co-director. Elden Ring has shipped over 30 million units worldwide since its launch, according to a report by Variety. After its release, Elden Ring received numerous accolades at the 2022 Game Awards, including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, and Best Role-Playing Game.

According to a report from Deadline, a spin-off of Elden Ring titled Elden Ring Nightreign is set to release on Friday, May 30, 2025.
