Anne Burrell's shocking death has left more questions than answers for her friends. The celebrity chef was found dead in her house in Brooklyn on June 17, 2025. However, five weeks after her passing, the City of New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled out Burrell's death as a suicide. What led to the conclusion is the fact that they found medications in her system.

Her body was found:

"surrounded by approximately (100) assorted pills."

According to the medical examiner, Anne Burrell passed away due to:

"acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine."

However, Burrell's friends refuse to believe this, since they just saw her hours before her sudden passing. Keep reading to learn what Burrell's friends have to say about the suicide ruling.

What did Anne Burrell's friends say about ruling her death as suicide?

While the sources remain anonymous, one of them, who was close to Anne Burrell, mentioned how happy she looked a few hours before her death, which made it impossible to believe that the cause was suicide.

Burrell had recently been trying a new hobby, improv performance, and she seemed to be enjoying it. The source explained:

"She looked like she was having the time of her life at Improv... Who knows what happened after that. It's all sort of puzzling. She lived life. She was not a downer – she lived... For her, every day was a party in Anne's world. She lived every day. Everyone was shocked."

They added how everyone saw Anne. They said:

"There was no one that was like, 'the last time I saw Anne, she was in the gutter.' For it to be the night of the performance [doesn’t make sense]. She nailed it. She was on Cloud 9. She couldn't wait for it. It was such a moment."

Furthermore, the source also added how Burrell was enjoying her life and her newfound friends. They elaborated:

"She was having so much fun with this group of new friends... Anne just loved making friends. She put herself out there. Everywhere she goes, she'd make friends. She loved the party, she loved being around people, she loved entertaining."

Phil Casaceli, a co-worker and friend, said:

"I was like, 'No way. I don't believe it.' It doesn't all make sense. She goes out, she has a great night. I don't believe it. That [the drugs] with alcohol – to me, it just seems like an accidental thing. To me, it just doesn't add up. She was always smiling," he said, finding it difficult to grasp that suicide was the actual cause of Anne's death.

The source concluded by speculating how Anne Burrell passed in relation to the ruling. They said:

"Maybe she never thought about it [suicide] before, and decided to take all the pills in the cabinet [that night]."

Anne Burrell's sudden death has left loved ones questioning the official ruling, as many insist she seemed joyful and full of life just hours before. While the medical examiner confirmed drug intoxication, friends find it hard to believe that Burrell died by suicide.
