Julia Garner reveals that her much-anticipated Madonna biopic is still in the works, despite the long wait.
Garner was first revealed as the final choice for the role in 2022 by Variety. The actress was going to play the Queen of Pop for a biopic set up at Universal Pictures. However, the studio decided not to go ahead with the project, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
The next year, Madonna offered hope to her fans, saying that she was still working on the script, but the film didn't receive a concrete update then. Garner finally opened up about the topic during her recent appearance on the Smartless podcast.
While speaking with Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and a fellow Ozark alum, Jason Bateman, she revealed that the movie is "supposed to still happen." She further added,
“But I also feel like anything that’s great … takes a long time [to be completed]"
Julia Garner sheds light on her audience process for the Madonna biopic
Julia Garner's work speaks for itself. She has been the scene-stealer in Netflix's brooding psychological thriller Ozark, which earned her three Emmys. It led her to appear at the audition for the Madonna biopic, where she was reportedly up against Florence Pugh, Sky Ferreira, and Odessa Young, among others, to land the role.
In the interview, Garner revealed details about the process that led to her casting. She said,
“It just came about. I knew they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer, and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”
Despite not being a trained dancer, she raised her confidence through a pep talk, asking herself,
“‘OK, what would Madonna do?’"
She further revealed the answer,
"Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.'”
