Avatar: Fire and Ash might not be the best film in the popular sci-fi film series James Cameron began in 2009, but it has performed exceptionally well at the global box office. In a recent update, it is currently the number one film in Korea, grossing $5.2 million over the January 2-4 weekend, according to Variety.
All in all, it has raked in $44.4 million in the country since its release, and the numbers are only expected to grow. Speaking of the film's global numbers, it has surpassed $1 billion already, with over $307 million from the domestic territory and approximately $780 million from the rest of the world, as of this writing.
Both the Avatar films were major box office successes, with the first film still holding the crown for the highest-grossing film of all time, with almost $3 billion in the pocket. The sequel is currently sitting at over $2.3 billion. James Cameron said that he might step away from the fourth and the fifth films if Avatar: Fire and Ash flopped, but it seems like he won't have to do it anymore.
With Avatar: Fire and Ash, the year 2025 now has 3 films crossing the $1 billion mark: Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stitch. Ne Zha 2 is the only one to reach the $2 billion mark at the global box office. What's interesting about it is that it was a non-English film to do that, which is a rare phenomenon.
Other films that dominated the box office but didn't reach the billion-dollar mark include A Minecraft Movie ($958 million), Jurassic World Rebirth ($869 million), Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle ($780 million), and more.
What to look for in 2026 now
Last year did well with films like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2, and more. Some films didn't explode at the box office, but they sure struck a chord with the audiences. Among these films were Weapons, Thunderbolts*, Mickey 17, and more.
Now, it's time to look forward, and there are so many highly anticipated films releasing in 2026. The year-end, especially, is going to be a banger. We have made a list of some of these projects, which you can see here.
If it was Avatar: Fire and Ash vs. Zootopia 2 at the end of last year, it is going to be Avengers: Doomsday vs. Dune Part Three this year. What's more intense is that both films are releasing on the same date. It is really hard to say if any of the films will see their earnings affected due to the clash.
Other than these two, a project from master filmmaker Christopher Nolan, called The Odyssey, will be released in 2026. The trailer of the film was released recently on YouTube, and we got a taste of what's coming in Nolan's mythical outing. Matt Damon is playing the Greek hero Odysseus in it.
More films we look forward to this year include Cold Storage, Project Hail Mary, and more.
