Ballerina has just crossed a major milestone as an installment of the John Wick franchise. Per Box Office Mojo, the film has earned over $94 million worldwide, $44 million domestically, and about $50 million internationally. With these figures, it has surpassed the box office collection of the first John Wick film, which earned $86 million worldwide.
Unfortunately, that won't be enough for Ballerina to rise to the level of other franchise entries, which have been widely successful. Released in 2017, the second John Wick film earned about $174 million. Then, the third film earned over $328 million, and the fourth one earned about $447 million. They have proven themselves as benchmarks for commercially successful action thrillers that are also critically acclaimed. Every film from the franchise has received a warm reception from the critics, which isn't always the case with actioners.
Ballerina also received a favorable response from the critics, earning a 76% fresh score. However, despite crossing a milestone with its latest box office collection, it might not be able to match other John Wick films with their box office success.
That is particularly unfortunate since the film had received a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore from the North American audiences. It means that audiences are loving it as much as the critics. However, that might not be enough for the Ana de Armas starrer to find a footing.
Ballerina will likely not cross the box office collection of the rest of the John Wick films
Ballerina was released on June 6, 2025, with much fanfare from casual moviegoers and critics alike. It seemed like their love and appreciation would help the film reach box office heights like its franchise predecessors, but that hasn't been the case.
The film earned a modest sum of $24 million on its opening weekend and has lost its momentum in its second weekend with a reported 60% drop in earnings. Considering the product budget of $90 million, the film has crossed that number with its $94 million mark. However, that doesn't give us the complete picture.
Sources suggest that the film needs to cross the $220-$230 million mark to reach the break-even point. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely considering the present pull toward this film. It might also mean that the reason why the John Wick films worked was their wounded protagonist and the star, Keanu Reeves, who grew into this iconic role.
Ballerina is only the first project with Ana de Armas in the lead as Eve Macarro. So, it might take a while for the Blonde star to find a footing in this neon-lit action thriller universe.
Ballerina's box office collection might affect the chances of the sequel and further spin-offs

According to ScreenRant, the Ana de Armas starrer might not be a successful project for the studio. This puts the future of this spin-off project in jeopardy. It can also put the chances of other spin-off projects at potential threat.
However, De Armas' performance has received a mainly favorable response. So, we'll have to wait and see whether Lionsgate decides to take the chapter in her life forward.
