After announcing his retirement from acting in 2017, Daniel Day-Lewis returns with a new film, Anemone, directed by his son, Roman. This emotionally charged drama sees him playing a man living somewhere in Northern England. He is recovering from an irrefutable emotional pain while trying to mend his relationship with his brother.

Anemone is a psychological drama that will premiere at the New York Film Festival by the end of this September. It will then receive a limited theatrical release on October 3, followed by a wider release on October 10. Here's the film's synopsis, as per the festival,

"Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis roars back to the screen for his first role in eight years in this absorbing family drama directed by Ronan Day-Lewis about lives undone by seemingly irreconcilable legacies of political and personal violence."
"Co-written by father and son, the Northern England–set Anemone begins as a middle-aged man (Sean Bean) sets out from his suburban home on a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship—one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier."

The cast includes Daniel Day-Lewis as Ray Stoker, with Sean Bean playing his brother, Jem. Samantha Morton stars as Nessa, while Samuel Bottomley plays Brian, with Safia Oakley-Green in an undisclosed role. As revealed in the synopsis, the father-son duo wrote the screenplay for this film, directed by Ronan.

The new Anemone trailer shows Daniel Day-Lewis as a force to be reckoned with

Daniel Day-Lewis returns in Anemone in a role that feels closer to his intense performance as Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood. He looks just as detached from the world and traumatized, even if socioeconomically the two characters seem miles apart. Anemone shows the actor channeling a similarly intense anger and distrust.

The new trailer doesn't reveal anything specific about the plot, but it hints at its overall emotional landscape. Within a minute or so, it offers glimpses of the film's atmosphere as it presents Ray, burdened by years of social isolation and potentially by unresolved traumas. It leads to an emotional outburst that neither he nor his brother may be ready for.

In the new trailer, we see small clips interwoven with a continuous snippet of Ray cutting wood. The camera slowly moves in his direction, letting us in on the horror of someone approaching him. In the end, it shows Ray punching Jem in the face, with his rage presumably stemming from deep-seated resentment toward his family.

Will Ray and Jem be able to mend their fractured relationship? Or will their reunion lead to a tragic end? We might find the answers only when the film arrives in theaters.

A week before the film's theatrical release, New York residents can enjoy it during its screenings at the New York Film Festival. Their official website suggests that the film will premiere on September 28 and will have two more screenings at the festival. Hopefully, it will mark Daniel Day-Lewis's return to acting and his next Oscar nomination.
