The Highlander reboot, starring The Witcher star Henry Cavill, has just received a new update. Amazon MGM's United Artists is in discussions about taking over the film's rights from Lionsgate. Deadline reports that they are in final negotiations for this deal. The project has been in the works for over a decade, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski supposed to direct and Cavill supposed to star.

There is still no definitive update available about its production schedule or release date. However, if the deal goes through, the fans will likely find it sooner rather than later, in theaters.

Highlander - Everything we know so far about this action film

Henry Cavill's upcoming film is supposed to be a reboot of the action-adventure franchise that began with the 1986 film by the same name, directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. It followed the 16th-century Scottish warrior Connor MacLeod (Lambert), who gets brutally wounded in a fight. His miraculous recovery leads him to realize that he is an immortal. Eventually, at the end of the 20th century, he returns for a fight under an alias.

Highlander showed MacLeod learning swordplay from swordsman Ramírez (Connery). So, Henry Cavill might just be the most suitable choice for this role, considering his recent comments about sword training at the CinemaCon 2025.

“If you think you’ve seen me do swordwork before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

He shared further details about the Highlander reboot.

“I am a lover of the original movies, for better or worse. It’s one of those things where reading the script, I wasn’t quite sure where they were going to go. [I discovered that the team is] going deep into the meaning of these characters, their trials and tribulations."

A while before this interaction, director Chad Stahelski also shared some insights into the reboot. He told The Hollywood Reporter,

“It’s just a tough nut to crack because the Highlander property is so involved and the mythology is so deep. But to try and make it our own, and be somewhat true to the original, yet do it in a way that makes it ours, is a little tricky. We don’t want to do a remake. We don’t want to do a reinvention. We want to do something that’s fresh, that utilizes the mythology of what everyone loves from the first movie.”

Before Stahleski's reboot project, Highlander received four follow-up movies along with three television shows. Stahelski's film is being written by Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4). Stahelski will also serve as a producer under his 87Eleven Entertainment banner. If the deal goes through, Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will join him from United Artists.

Henry Cavill has a few more projects on his roster, mainly Voltron, an alien invasion film co-written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice, We're the Millers) for Amazon. He is expected to star as Sherlock Holmes in Netflix's Enola Holmes 3, alongside Millie Bobby Brown. Some reports suggest he is also developing the Warhammer 40,000 projects as part of a franchise. He will soon be seen in Guy Ritchie's In The Grey, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Rosamund Pike, and Eiza González.

Director Chad Stahelski is currently busy with the creative development of further projects in the John Wick universe, including a fifth film and multiple spin-offs. He is also one of the producers of Nobody 2, starring Breaking Bad star Bob Odenkirk. In addition to Highlander, screenwriter Michael Finch is attached as a co-writer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.
