American actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore revealed on the November 3 episode of the Drew Barrymore Show that she recently had a breast cancer scare and had to undergo an emergency biopsy.
The 50-year-old was inspired to share her story after listening to the story of her guest, Tig Notaro, who underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2016.
“I have been wanting to discuss a certain subject on this show, and I did not know how. It is a very tough one to approach.”
She continued:
“But, having seen your documentary, I feel like I might be able to start scratching the surface here because of what you guys were brave enough, bold enough and smart enough to put out into the world, which is clearly being embraced, so I think that also gives us a little more confidence.”
She spoke to Tig about the cancer scare and reassured everyone that she was fine.
“This is the thing I've wanted to risk talking about on this show because — I recently had a scare. I'm completely fine, but I did get a bad mammogram, and I got taken into that room, and then I had an emergency biopsy, and I waited those 5 days.”
More details on Tig Notaro’s appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show
Drew Barrymore had cancer survivor Tig Notaro on the November 3 episode of her show. Noraro discussed how she coped with the experience and found peace with herself.
“You had breast cancer and you've spoken about it humorously, eloquently, fiercely, and brilliantly yourself. How did you calm yourself? How did you make peace with it?” Drew Barrymore asked.
Tig answered:
“Well, I mean, it cracked me open completely, and I went from being somebody that held everything to myself- I was going to do it on my own… I'm okay. Even when I came back from surgery, I had a double mastectomy, and my closest friends were settling in to stay with me, and I was like, ‘Oh, I'm fine, ’ and I couldn't even lift my arm. They were like ‘You all set, Tig,’ and I was like ‘Yep, I'm all set, you guys can just head out now.’”
She added:
“But what I can encourage people enough to do is to get over any sort of feelings that you can't ask for help or act like you don't need anybody. It is the greatest gift you can give yourself and the people that love you because people want to help. People want to do good, and it changed my life.”
