In Bugonia, the CEO of Auxolith, Michelle Fuller, finds herself kidnapped by a brother duo, Teddy and Don. Teddy is a huge believer in conspiracy theories, and is accompanied by his brother Don, a neurodivergent person. They are of the belief that Michelle is not a human, but is an alien belonging to the Andromedan species. They strongly believe that Michelle is out to sabotage Earth, and hence they kidnap her.
In the process, Michelle's bodily autonomy is taken away by them as they shave her head completely. They think her hair would enable her to be in touch with her mothership. In the meantime, Don gets a little tentative about this whole abduction situation as he is in a dilemma, so Michelle tries to leverage that by negotiating with him.
Some buried tragic histories are also uncovered, as we realize that in the past, Teddy and Don's mother, Sandy, was subjected to lab testing for Auxolith. This dehumanizing and fatal incident has slipped Sandy into a coma. Since then, Michelle has been supporting her treatment.
After a series of events in the film, Don kills himself when Michelle asks him to turn Teddy in to the police. Michelle then finds a different way to get out of this situation. She tells Teddy about an anti-freeze in her car that could help save Sandy. She claims this medicine is sourced from the Andromedans. Teddy believes her and uses the medicine on Sandy, and that kills her.
This gives an opportunity for Michelle to escape. She also realizes that she is not the only one who has been abducted by Teddy under this same suspicion. As Teddy comes back, Michelle goes along with his theories and agrees to being an alien.
She narrates a whole story of how, during the dinosaur age, they landed on earth and resulted in the eradication of dinosaurs. Out of guilt, they spawned a new group of species who eventually evolved into humans. But, as history shows, humans began wars against each other. Hence, that has left the alien group feeling horrified.
She also tells him that Sandy was an instrument in order to enable human evolution to an advanced stage. Now, as per Teddy's demands, Sandy shall organize a meeting between the aliens and Teddy.
As they were supposed to have the meeting at the Auxolith Headquarters, Teddy arrives there wearing a suicide vest as a backup plan in case Michelle tricks him. Michelle tells him that her closet is the place that acts as a channel to her ship. Michelle asks Teddy to hide there, and he follows. Michelle, under the pretense of operating the teleporter, sets off his vest, and hence, Teddy gets killed. With such a massive explosion, Michelle passes out.
Several moments later, Michelle finds herself in an ambulance and flees from it. Now, here comes the big twist in Bugonia. It is revealed that Teddy was not imagining all of this after all, as Michelle is, in fact, an Andromedan. What initially looked like a case of misunderstanding and clash of beliefs between an irrational, pseudoscientific man and a seemingly human CEO was all flipped over. Wow!
At the end of Bugonia, Michelle prepares to teleport and leave Earth. She talks to her fellow Andromedan community about how humans have actually failed completely. She proceeds to kill every human on earth as she pops a bubble over a globe. Now, there are no humans living on earth anymore. But there is a beautiful moment at the end, as we see a swarm of bees coming back to the planet.
The movie ends here. There is no post-credit scene to wait for.
