How to Train Your Dragon took a flight with Night Fury and Hiccup (Mason Thames in this film) again, and again, this story exploded at the box office. The live-action film, which Dean DeBlois returned to direct, is up and running in theaters, giving the fans some nostalgia as it takes them back to when the original film came out in 2010.

There's already a sequel in development, which is currently scheduled to release in 2027. This live-action movie was more or less the same, so we should expect more nostalgia for its sequel. That said, people might be curious about a post-credits or mid-credits scene. Should they stay after until the credits roll?

Yes and no. If you want to see a post-credit scene where Hiccup opens a book with a sketch of his new friend, the Night Fury Toothless, then you should stay. If you are hoping that it would give us a glimpse of what's to come in the How to Train Your Dragon sequel, then don't bother.

Does the How to Train Your Dragon post-credits scene set up a sequel?

While How to Train Your Dragon's post-credits scene doesn't exactly set up a sequel, it does give us a hint about what we will witness next. Hiccup is seen opening a book with an outlined sketch of Toothless. That's all, nothing more.

The film plays out the same as the original How to Train Your Dragon, where a Viking village hates dragons, which have become a frequent problem for them. However, Hiccup develops an unlikely bond with a Night Fury, and the two become best friends.

It isn't really acceptable for his father, Stoick the Vast, whom Gerard Butler returns to portray, but then these dragons help them in a way that reconciles this long-running rivalry between the creatures and the people.

That said, the post-credits scene can be interpreted as a new beginning, which it is. We can't really say what's going on in Hiccup's mind when he opened that book where he drew Toothless's sketch, but it appears that peace is restored and that dragons are now a part of this community.

What to expect from the How to Train Your Dragon sequel?

We will likely get the same story as How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and it might bring Cate Blanchett as Valka, Hiccup's mother, and Djimon Hounsou as the main antagonist dubbed Drago Bludvist, who voiced the mentioned characters in the movie.

The 2014 film brought a couple of large beasts into the equation. However, one is evil and the other is good. The good one, of course, falls, and the other one, who's on Drago's side, controls the smaller dragon via hypnotic sound waves.

Additionally, we get to see why Hiccup was the way he was. It was because of her mother, who also loves dragons. The final battle is fiercer in the animated sequel, which is also one of the things we should expect to see in its live-action remake.

Currently, the film is in development, which Universal Pictures announced during CinemaCon. It is set for a theatrical release on June 11, 2027.
