Eddie Murphy has been a crucial part of DreamWorks' Shrek film franchise. He will soon reprise his role as Shrek's hysterical sidekick, Donkey, in Shrek 5.

The film is slated to premiere at the end of next year. However, long before that happens, Murphy has revealed an exciting update for the fans, who can't get enough of his character's infectious energy. The Donkey will receive his spin-off project, according to Murphy's recent comments in his interview with ScreenRant.

"Donkey's going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They've written this funny story. We're doing that, starting that in September," Murphy said.

It's exciting news for the franchise's fans, who love these movies for their wild humor and know just how important these side characters are to make them all work.

Eddie Murphy's Shrek 5 is still under production

It's been over a decade since we met Shrek and his family. 2010's Shrek Forever After set the stage for the bigger challenges in Shrek's life as he gets bored with his life. The film didn't receive a lot of love upon its release, either from the critics or the casual moviegoers. So, it would be interesting to see whether the franchise bounces back to its glory with Shrek 5.

So far, Universal Pictures has shared a brief teaser for this fifth installment to announce its new cast members. It shows Euphoria and Dune star Zendaya making a surprise, but welcome addition to the voice cast as Shrek's daughter, Felicia. She is a teenager, which means there will be a time jump after the fourth film.

Considering all the excitement for Shrek and Princess Fiona's return, viewers might be wondering about the state of their production schedule. In the ScreenRant interview, Eddie Murphy revealed that it is still underway.

"They're still doing voiceover stuff. We're still in the booth, and literally, we're still doing Shrek. We start in September on Donkey, we're doing a Donkey one, and that'll be three years from now, but we're about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September."

Based on his comments, the cast is still working on the voice performances for their characters. At the same time, he shares a hopeful update for the fans of his comedic style.

Eddie Murphy hints that "Donkey will have his own movie" in the coming years. That makes it the second character from the series to receive a spin-off treatment. Before him, Puss in Boots, the warrior feline character, was brought back to life with two movies, one in 2011 and the other in 2022.

Other than that, Eddie Murphy has another exciting project on his horizon. The Oscar-nominated SNL alum will soon appear in Prime Video's upcoming action comedy The Pickup, alongside Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson. Other than that, he is reportedly in talks to star in a Pink Panther movie. Hopefully, we'll receive more updates about this project with Eddie Murphy soon.
