Highlander is a reboot of the namesake 1986 film. The fantasy action-adventure film will star Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod, while John Wick fame Chad Stahelski will be helming it. The film has been in the works for several years, with several actors being eyed for the major roles. But with the latest developments, the movie will be able to take the next steps.
Besides Cavill, the makers have announced the addition of another actor to the mix. That person is Russell Crowe. The internet is reportedly buzzing with this announcement, as the actor has a proven record of strong performances over a long career. Let us look into the details.
More about Highlander as Russell Crowe joins the cast
As per The Wrap, Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Highlander, and he will be starring opposite Henry Cavill. The makers are yet to reveal the character he will be playing, but his addition to the cast is surely exciting.
The film is a reboot of the 1986 film and has gone through some casting changes. Ryan Reynolds and Kevin McKidd's names were also attached to the project at one point. Cavill was approached for the role back in 2021 and he agreed to it. At the 2024 CinemaCon, the actor spoke about doing the film and his love for the original. He said,
“I am a lover of the original movies, for better or worse. It’s one of those things where reading the script, I wasn’t quite sure where they were going to go.”
The actor, who had started preparing for the role, added
"[The team are] going deep into the meaning of these characters, their trials and tribulations.”
Cavill further told the fans that his sword fighting in this film will be unlike anything they have seen before.
“If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
The film's director has revealed that its storyline will start in the early 1500s and will go all the way to the present times in Hong Kong and New York. Stahelski said,
"There's a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it's a bit of a love story, but not how you think. On 'John Wick,' I learned a lot on how to bend the storytelling a little ... another kind of myth."
In a separate 2023 interview, Stahelski revealed that he has been working on the Highlander reboot for quite some time.
"I've worked on Highlander for years now, for Henry Cavill. Being retroactive is hard. If I were to do a remake of 'Highlander' right now, you'd expect a lot of mythology in those first two hours; you couldn't explore stuff without it."
In May, the filmmaker revealed that if things go right, the shooting might begin in September this year. He also stated that the film might get a release either in 2027 or 2028.
Since things are finally falling into place, we can hope that the viewers will finally get to see the film soon.
