Yorgos Lanthimos' upcoming film Bugonia has brought in a brand-new trailer for the film. The fascinating trailer is laced with social commentary and a tinge of sharp dark humor!
The Academy Award-winning actor Emma Stone once again joins hands with the helmer in this film, after starring in his renowned projects, including The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and Kinds of Kindness (2024). Like their previous collaborations, this film too looks quite promising.
A Hollywood revamp of the Korean filmmaker Jang Joon-hwan's film Save the Green Planet! (2003), this film follows the plot of an abduction that takes place, driven by pseudoscientific, irrational beliefs. Two conspiracists strongly believe that a woman named Michelle, a prominent CEO, is actually an alien who is setting out to sabotage the planet. In order to "save" the planet, they abduct her.
Its official synopsis goes as follows:
Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Everything about the trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos' Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons
The official trailer for Bugonia has just launched, and it gives us an insight into the world that it is set in. We witness how Emma Stone's character, the dynamic CEO Michelle, has some strong visions for the company. She has been featured in prestigious magazines such as TIME, Forbes, and you name it!
Meanwhile, we see the conspirators' duo, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. The voiceover by Jesse Plemons sounds like a classic script of a conspirator who is so deeply convinced by their false beliefs that they are beyond reasoning at this point. It goes like:
"They want you to think it's you, that it's you who made this world. But it's always been them. All we've lost..all this been done to us..we're setting that right again."
As this voiceover plays, we witness the conspirators following Michelle, but she manages to defend herself with her combat skills. However, it is soon shown that Michelle has been held in captivity. The conspirators call that place the 'headquarters of human resistance.'
It is also revealed that Michelle's hair has been completely shaven by them so that she cannot correspond with her 'mothership.' Her skin seems to have developed white patches as well.
Furthermore, in the trailer, Jesse Plemons' character, Teddy, accuses Michelle of destroying the planet. We witness lots of questioning, conflicts, confrontations, and escapes where Michelle strives to prove herself to be an alien.
The biggest irony that the trailer for Bugonia points out is that these two men, who claim to "protect" the planet, are actually the ones who are violating human rights. They are not threatened by aliens, actually; they are threatened by women in power and are scared by the thought of the status quo being destroyed.
In the end, when Teddy tells Michelle:
"I know what you are"
To which Michelle says:
"I know you too, Teddy."
This statement enrages Teddy, and he climbs on the table to attack Michelle. The trailer for Bugonia closes with a clip of Michelle before the abduction. She is wearing sunglasses, is driving her car, and happily sings to Chappell Roan's 'Good Luck, Babe!'.
