Birkin bags have been a style statement for celebrities over the years. The original bag, which was designed for actress and singer Jane Birkin in early 1980s, was sold on Thursday at a Paris auction for a little over $10 million, CNN reports. The bidding started at $1 million.

According to NBC News, the story behind this bag goes back to when the singer was on board a plane to London. The straw tote bag she was carrying fell off, and all her belongings spilled over. The man seated beside her suggested that she get a bag containing pockets. She replied:

“The day Hermes makes one with pockets, I will get it.”

The person who suggested the idea was none other than 'Mr. Hermes', or Jean-Louis Dumas, widely known as the person who turned the luxury brand into a global phenomenon when he served as chairman. They brainstormed a design, which they drew on a vomiting bag available on the flight, and the rest is history.

However, over the years, several celebrities were seen with these bags.

Kim Kardashian has been called the "Birkin bag lady" because of her extensive collection. E! News notes that colors in her collection are black, yellow, olive, among others. She was once spotted with an interesting black crocodile design.

Actress and film producer Eva Longoria had an Abyss blue bag. According to E! News, the bag was 35 cm in dimension, and she was spotted with it at the LAX airport. However, this wasn’t the only time she had the bag. She was seen making a Birkin statement at the Cannes film festival in May 2010.

Jennifer Lopez once carried a red Birkin bag matching her sweat suit while she was in London. In 2012, she held a white bag for an event at LA’s Wet Republic pool.

Victoria Beckham seems to have a great obsession with Birkin bags. In 2007, she was seen holding pink bag at the Home Depot Stadium that matched her outfit. British Vogue published a piece in 2023, quoting The Guardian, which mentioned that she had around 100 bags from the collection. In 2021, she was spotted holding an ochre bag while wearing a face mask.

TV host and model Padma Lakshmi attended the 2012 fashion show by Naeem Khan carrying a white Birkin bag. Two years later, she was seen leaving her New York apartment with a mustard-colored bag.

Actress Rachel Bilson was once seen with a 35 cm bag, which complemented her white top and blue denim look. Bilson seems quite famous for her bag collection, which features brands like Chanel, Miu Miu, and Chloe, among others.

According to E! News, when Kristin Cavallari gave birth to Jay Cutler’s baby, he gifted her a gray-colored Birkin bag. She was seen carrying the bag in Los Angeles.

On selling the original bag at the Paris auction on July 10, the seller, identified as Catherine B, told The Guardian:

“So, this bag is like my son. So, you know, when your son goes to university, you say, ‘Congrats, you will be the best,’ so now, I can tell it, ‘You will be the best. It will be perfect for your second life. We do many thing together but now, it’s time to say goodbye. So, have a long life, my son.’”

She thought it was a good price for the bag, calling it the prototype.
