The trailer for Mafia: The Old Country recently dropped, and it has sent waves of excitement through the gaming community. The trailer sets the tone for the eagerly anticipated game, which will be released on August 8, 2025, and will be available to fans for $49.99. The game acts as the prequel, or the origin story of the Mafia franchise, and will depict the backstory of the protagonist Enzo Favara as he rises through the ranks of Don Torrisi's fledgling criminal organization.

There had been fears within the gaming industry that the game would fall flat on its face, especially since it was vying for the audience's attention with GTA VI. But that storm of cloud has since been averted, with GTA VI now scheduled to be released on May 26, 2026. This gives Mafia: The Old Country some breathing space to move at its own pace. As fans on social media caught wind of the trailer, the inevitable comparisons to GTA also followed very soon.

One fan quipped:

"Everyone in a rush now that GTA got delayed."

Another joked:

"They should launch it same week as GTA 6 and see who wins, a bit of friendly competition?"

Another fan shared his excitement:

"I’m pretty excited about this one! Honestly glad it’s not a 70s Vegas scene, that can come next lol. I’ve always wanted a gritty (hopefully it is), raw, early 1900s Sicilian Mob story. And this looks like it’ll deliver!"

A fourth fan pleaded caution when he said:

"Looks promising, but I’m holding my hype until I see actual gameplay mechanics in action."

One fan expressed his elation by drawing comparisons to other iconic games:

"Indiana jones meets assasins creed? the riding looked stiff af."

Another fan noted:

"It looks good but it doesn’t look like a mafia game it looks more like a tomb raider or an uncharted set in Italy."

Mafia: The Old Country Press Release

The game is set in Sicily in the 1900s, and is also the first game developed for the franchise by 2K and Hangar 13 since the release of Mafia III in 2016. Nick Baynes, the president of Hangar 13, stated during the release of the trailer:

"Mafia: The Old Country is a focused, linear experience that combines quality storytelling, authentic era immersion and a refined take on the familiar Mafia gameplay. That focus allows us to deliver a story that’s gritty, grounded, brutal and emotional. Embracing early 1900s era Sicily, this is a mafia origin story that follows our protagonist, Enzo Favara, as he takes the oath and works his way up Don Torrisi's crime family."

2K president David Ismailer was similarly chuffed at the game, and he also shared his thoughts in the press release:

"We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments. We’re excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis."

While the release of the trailer for Mafia: The Old Country has undoubtedly caused a stir among the fans, it remains to be seen if that will translate into tangible success for the game or not.
