American stand-up comedian and podcaster Marc Maron recently revealed how he paid Taylor Swift $50,000 approximately £37,000 to use a minute from the singer’s hit song Bigger Than the Whole Sky.
During an episode of Vulture's Good One podcast, the 61-year-old revealed he first reached out to a co-writer of the song before he was referred to Taylor Swift’s team.
“I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him - and he's the co-writer on that song," Maron explained. "I said, 'I don't know what's proper or how to do this, but we're running out of money on this thing. It's probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?'”
He also added that he got permission to use the song, but only for a minute, though, and any more will welcome more money.
“I would have gone over the minute, (but) it would have been more money.”
He added:
“It had to happen. The real fear was, like, if she doesn't let you use it, and then what do you do? You can't do the bit on the special.”
One fan commented on the whole deal: “Hope it pays off for him,”
Fans react to Marc Maron and Taylor Swift’s deal
@PopCrave on X, formerly Twitter, shared the announcement with the caption:
“Marc Maron says he paid $50,000 to use one minute of Taylor Swift’s 'Bigger Than The Whole Sky' in his upcoming comedy special.”
The post quickly garnered several reactions as fans took to the comments section to express their opinions on the news.
Some felt the money was too much for only a minute of use.
“Imagine paying 50k to have 1 minute of a mediocre song that nobody has ever listened to in your comedy special,” @eternalcumslimz commented.
"$50K?! just for a sample?!" @zfabrogmailcom commented.
Other fans felt the amount was just alright.
“He should be lucky she didn’t charge more because all her songs are golden tf?” @Eilishlifestyle replied."
"I'd imagine it to be more than 50k tbh," @popcomes commented.
Some fans, however, were more concerned about how the comedian was going to apply the song to a comedy sketch.
“Everybody talking about the cost, I’m more concerned with how the saddest song on Midnights will be comedic in any way, shape or form,” @pooponnuns stated.
“I'm curious what context he's using it, as many women who have had miscarriages or child loss have identified with it,” @SlidingCutlet15 added.
Taylor Swift’s Bigger Than the Whole Sky was released on October 21, 2022, as a bonus track from the singer’s 2022 album Midnights. Marc Maron’s Panicked is expected to premiere on HBO on Friday, August 1, 2025.
