The Fantastic Four: First Steps isn’t just a reboot; it’s a complete reimagining, infused with retro flair, bold cosmic energy, and the full Marvel Studios polish. Marvel’s First Family is finally getting the comeback they deserve, and this time, they’re not starting from scratch. Gone are the awkward origin stories and underwhelming villains. Instead of rehashing how they got their powers, First Steps drops us into a stylized 1960s alternate universe, where Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben are already established heroes.
The vibe? A Jack Kirby daydream brought to life, complete with futurist tech, bold color palettes, and that sci-fi optimism that defined the Silver Age of comics. Think less gritty realism, more pulp-magazine-meets-modern-Marvel, with Kevin Feige diving into how the new version is different from the one that existed in the pre-MCU era.
Talking to Empire magazine, Feige talked about how the superhero team has evolved. He stated:
I was around for those early Fantastic Four movies… and like all of the pre-MCU movies, I learned a lot. I always thought, if we ever got creative autonomy ourselves, we might do things a little differently… It was a different time… there was still a bit of a fear of being silly.
Feige then emphasized the importance of The Fantastic Four in the MCU as he added,
“I think that there are no four characters that are more important for the history of Marvel...They are Marvel’s First Family, and I really wanted to do them justice.”
Sure enough, both the new team and the film look promising and have a chance at reinventing the MCU in surprising ways. As the sixth phase of the MCU is introduced with these new heroes, the future, as it seems, lies in their hands.
More details about The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Pedro Pascal leads the charge in The Fantastic Four: First Steps as the endlessly elastic Reed Richards, joined by Vanessa Kirby’s razor-sharp Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn’s fiery Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s lovable rock-solid Ben Grimm. Inspired by Jack Kirby’s classic artwork and sci-fi optimism, the film leans into color, character, and cosmic weirdness in a way the pre-MCU versions never dared.
Instead of diving straight into Doom, the story pits the Four against none other than Galactus, setting the stage for a sky-splitting, multiverse-rattling showdown. We also have Julia Garner as Silver Surfer, becoming the first woman to portray the hero. But it’s not just about spectacle, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is about family, legacy, and finding humanity in the most inhuman of challenges. If this is Marvel's next phase, it’s stretching the boundaries in all the right ways.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
