Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated projects in 2026, and that's hardly surprising considering how long Marvel fans have been looking forward to a movie with a similar scale and scope. The last time they got a taste of something similar was back in 2019 when Avengers: Endgame assembled almost every hero that the MCU had introduced until then. One of its key players was Natasha Romanoff, who sacrificed herself to get hold of the Soul Stone.

Since then, the fans saw Black Widow only in a standalone movie in 2021, which takes place before the events of Endgame. It was supposed to cheer up fans who couldn't bear the loss of this character. After all, Scarlett Johansson made Natasha's loss affect them as deeply as it does.

So, some fans were hoping to see her back in another Marvel project, even in Avengers: Doomsday. Johansson has been answering questions about her potential return to the universe in almost every other interview she has been a part of recently.

One of these interviews happened between her and the Stranger Things star David Harbour, for Interview magazine. Harbour recently starred in Thunderbolts* and is going to be a part of Avengers: Doomsday. However, Johansson was not a part of the cast revealed on March 27, 2025. So, Harbour asked her in jest about her potential return despite her apparent death in the previous MCU projects.

"Oh, come on, Scarlett. We all know you’re the secret character. We all know the Black Widow comes back from the dead," Harbour said.

Johansson replied,

"If I come back from the dead, then half the world’s population dies. Didn’t you see Endgame for Christ’s sake?"

Before speaking with Harbour about her role in Avengers: Doomsday, Johansson spoke with InStyle magazine about why Black Widow's return to the universe won't make sense. Addressing the MCU fans expecting Natasha's appearance, Johansson said,

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”

There are two elements to Johansson's comments: the first is about the return of her character, and the second is about her return to the universe as an actor.

Through her response, Johansson mentioned why Natasha's return to the MCU doesn't make sense. However, some fans might be holding on to the hope that Black Widow will return to life in ways many other characters have been brought back within its universe. There is always another part of the multiverse for the writers to bounce on to make her character return to the screen.

On the other hand, as an actress, Johansson might be done with the universe and looking to expand her horizons beyond playing the beloved superhero. More recently, she also revealed that she would be up for a big-scale action movie that Marvel is known for. Yet, for now, she has made it clear that she won't star in Avengers: Doomsday.
