British author Katherine Rundell has sold the live-action rights to her fantasy novels, Impossible Creatures, to Disney in a seven-figure deal. The series currently includes two books, and Rundell is signed on to write at least three more, with plans for additional entries and spin-offs.

Rundell will also adapt her novels into screenplays for the Disney live-action films.

What we know about the deal between Disney and Impossible Creatures author Katherine Rundell so far

Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures series follows a young boy, Christopher, who discovers a magical land while visiting his grandfather in the Scottish Highlands. There, he meets Mal, a young girl, and together they work to protect the mystical creatures of the land, whose magical force is fading.

The first Impossible Creatures book was published in 2023, and the second book in the series, The Poisoned King, was published earlier this year. Rundell received widespread acclaim for her novels and became the first author since J.K. Rowling to top the bestseller charts in both the US and the UK simultaneously. She even won the awards for Author of the Year and Children's Book of the Year at The British Book Awards.

Speaking about the deal, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger said he loved the storyline of the books when he read them and immediately thought that Disney would be able to do justice to the live-action adaptation.

"When I read Impossible Creatures, I knew it belonged here at Disney. I was immediately drawn into the vibrant world Katherine imagined and the possibilities of what we could do together with this story. Written by Katherine herself, these movies are in the best of hands with our Walt Disney Studios team, and I can’t wait to see this tale brought to the screen."

Rundell is also extremely excited about the collaboration and was full of praise for her experience working with the team at Disney.

"I’m absolutely thrilled to be linking arms with Disney. It’s a privilege to be writing these screenplays and developing these first movies in the franchise together with Charles, my team at Impossible Films, and with the exceptional team at Disney."

She also expressed special gratitude towards Bob Iger, highlighting his excitement about the book.

"I’m especially grateful to Bob Iger, whose enthusiasm after reading the book helped set this collaboration in motion, and to Alan Bergman and David Greenbaum for being incredible partners throughout this process. Our ambition is to build Glimouria and Impossible Creatures into a spectacular series of films, so that we can entertain and inspire family audiences across the world."

Production on the live-action films has not yet begun, but the deal with Disney has set the project in motion.
