Is there going to be a Playdate 2? All you need to know about the potential sequel to the Alan Ritchson film

Alan Ritchson and Kevin James' buddy action comedy Playdate is currently the most-watched movie on Amazon Prime. Yesterday, according to the tracking platform FlixPatrol, the film was at the top, beating the likes of The War with Grandpa (2020), Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), Red One (2024), Play Dirty (2025), and more.

Though there were no conversations about a sequel to the film, there are now, after Luke Greenfield, who directed it, recently talked about it in an interview with ScreenRant. There, he simply talked about the process of creating the franchise, and now we have our hopes up. He said,

"I mean, this is a massive franchise. Everyone knows it. When I go into a movie, I'm just so focused, again, as a writer-director, on making the film great. I don't really go in usually of like, "Okay, how do I make four of these?" Because you've got to have the foundation. When you go to Lethal Weapon, when you go to Beverly Hills Cop, those originals are so fantastic. And then, when you make it just outstanding, the world is like, "Where's the next one?" Obviously, Amazon is primed to go, and I've begun talking to Neil about that. We actually have some very funny ideas for what's next. I'm sure that's gonna start happening pretty quick."

While Luke Greenfield directed the movie, he and Neil Goldman wrote it. Goldman is usually associated with Garrett Donovan, and they usually write TV comedies.

Playdate didn't really become a fan favorite film

Playdate may be going high on the streaming platform, which makes it look good, but its reviews tell a different story. As of this writing, the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes has given it a critical score of 17%. There's no critical consensus on it now.

However, the fans weren't that cruel, as the Popcornmeter of the website shows. It has currently given it a rating of 58%, but the bucket is down. Maybe in the upcoming days, some positive reviews may lift the popcorn bucket back.

What is Playdate about?

The film is about a couple of suburban dads, Brian (James) and Jeff (Ritchson), who become friends. However, Jeff isn't really a typical suburban dad. He is ex-military and has perhaps made a reputation in that line. So, Playdate sees him get involved in some confrontations while also pulling Kevin into it.

Playdate takes fun to a new level when we see a clone of Jeff entering the story. He was created by a millionaire named Simon Maddox, played by Alan Tudyk. It was meant to be a part of some emotionless supersoldier program, but here's the twist: that clone develops emotions. Something like Tron: Ares, which was released recently, where an artificial program also develops emotions.

We will still need to wait for the sequel, but there is a mid-credits scene in the movie that sets up the story. And it seems like more people are coming after them. So, better be prepared.
