Netflix's Nonnas is based on a true story and you can actually make a reservation for the real Enoteca Maria

The Netflix comedy follows the story of protagonist Jody "Joe" Scaravella, played by the popular actor Vince Vaughn. The story shows how the New Yorker embarks upon his journey of restaurant ownership with Enoteca Maria, an Italian restaurant that he opens, naming it after his mother. The USP of the 35-seater restaurant, however, lies in the fact that all of its chefs are grandmothers from different parts of the world.

With this, Joe Scaravella ensures not just a homely and familiar touch in the food served at his restaurant but also brings a cultural fusion to every meal that is served at Enoteca Maria. The real restaurant is located in Staten Island, New York, and has been operational since 2007.

While the character of Joe Scaravella has been inspired by a real person, the nonnas who work at his restaurant in the movie, Roberta, Antonella, Teresa, and Gia, are fictional characters and do not represent any of the real grandmothers working at Enoteca Maria. In real life, there were so many grandmothers working as chefs at Enoteca Maria that at one point, the restaurant had rotational shifts for its chefs.

If you want to experience the magic of the grandmothers for yourself, you can do so by visiting the real-life restaurant of Enoteca Maria. However, the restaurant is not available for reservation on any booking app - you have to make a phone call to make reservations, old-school style. Similarly, it also does not offer its food on food delivery services.
