Superman, the DCU's first test of the viability of this new franchise, is doing well in the cinema halls. Released on July 11, 2025, the DCU movie has managed to earn over $500 million, making it a respectable success. This has fans wondering if we will be getting a sequel to David Corenswet's version of the Man of Steel any time soon.
This had a fan ask Gunn if the latter was working on the sequel to the DCU version of The Last Son of Krypton. In the beginning, Gunn teased that he was indeed writing a sequel to Superman but later went on to say that the project he is currently writing features Corenswet's Kal-El in a major role, but it is not a sequel. This probably means that we may get a sequel, but it will take time.
James Gunn's latest Superman tease explained
On Thursday, July 31, 2025, filmmaker James Gunn spoke about the persistent issue of toxic fandom on his Threads account. The director and DC Studios co-CEO's exact words were:
"If you see something toxic online, my advice would be, don’t interact with it. Attention only fans the flames of online toxicity. It’s one of the reasons I’m primarily on this platform. It isn’t because there are fewer toxic people here (although there seemingly are), it’s because it started as an online culture more willing to let the toxic personality in the back of the room shout himself hoarse and go away. When you shout back, you’re making that voice relevant."
The Superman director's post further continued:
"You’re giving it a sounding board. You are the midwife helping to birth that toxic voice into the world. You’re helping to make a few thousand angry voices seem like millions. And, to be clear, when I’m talking about toxicity, I’m talking primarily about rage or cruelty. I’m not talking about not liking something or having reasonable arguments about things we like and don’t. Anyway, forgive the PSA, but it’s on my mind. ❤️🧜♂️"
Below this post, a fan asked the director if the latter will be relaxing now that the DCU Man of Steel movie has been released, meaning the promotional runs are over. To this question, Gunn responded that he has the Peacemaker Season 2 promotions ahead of him and that he is writing a sequel, without specifying the project.
This response had another fan confused, as previously Gunn had hinted that Kal-El's next appearance in the DCU would not be in a direct Superman sequel. To this, the director offered a clarification:
"Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It's not "Superman 2."
This has some wondering if The Last Son of Krypton's next appearance will see him teaming up with Batman:
As his next appearance is hinted to be another superhero's project, fans online are theorizing that in his next appearance, David Corenswet's Man of Steel will team up with Gotham's Caped Crusader, Batman. Considering that Batman exists in this universe, and he has been protecting Gotham for over a decade, it seems that this universe's version of these two heroes will have a similar rapport as the characters in Zack Snyder's DCEU.
