James Gunn's Superman continues to soar higher and higher at the box office even after the release of the MCU's The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

It seems like Gunn's kind-hearted Man of Steel has won over the audience more than expected. According to DiscussingFilm, the film has crossed the $300 million figure at the domestic box office. So, it has already surpassed the lifetime domestic collection of Man of Steel, which stands at $291 million, as per The Numbers.

The publication also suggests that, with its domestic haul, the DCU film has become the first ever Superman film to cross the $300 million mark. This offers a promising sign for the renewed creative strategy from DC/Warner Bros. The studio will soon return to big screens in 2026, with Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock.

How is Superman holding up against Man of Steel?

David Corenswet's Superman has surpassed expectations in the North American market, charming its way past the collections from Henry Cavill's Man of Steel. It is still running in theaters and drawing audiences despite the films released in the following weeks. So, sources suggest that it will sustain its momentum.

Despite its bright success at home, the DCU film is lagging relatively behind in the international markets. According to The Numbers, the movie has earned over $213 million overseas, which is far from its $300 million domestic collection.

In comparison, Man of Steel did far better internationally, earning over $376 million. Its worldwide gross is over $667 million, while James Gunn's latest has recently crossed the $500 million worldwide. However, according to Forbes, it is still able to bring families and younger audiences to the theaters and hold strong in cinemas.

James Gunn's punk rock-themed project about the son of Krypton earned over $125 million on its opening weekend in the North American theaters. It became the third-highest debut for a film in the domestic market, after Lilo & Stitch, which earned over $146 million, and A Minecraft Movie, which earned over $162 million.

MCU's latest tentpole, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, stands just behind Gunn's film in this regard, earning $118 million, surpassing the initial expectations, as per Deadline. Its worldwide total landed at $218 million, shortly behind Superman's reported $220 million. So, the two films are in a close competition in terms of their collection.

Neither film will face major competition from a blockbuster release in the coming weeks, which can help continue their successful run at the box office.

Gunn's film refreshed the DC universe with a refreshing voice, bringing in new faces to play the comic book characters. Apart from David Corenswet as the bespectacled hero, Rachel Brosnahan was cast as journalist Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Isabela Merced joined them as Hawkgirl, while Edi Gathegi became the scene-stealer, Mister Terrific. Gunn also crafted a romantic arc between Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio's Eve Teschmacher, who is the key to the hero's eventual win against Luthor's plans. Their collaborative input has helped the film win over the audience.
