Frankenstein is one of the most anticipated films of the year, as fans are excited to see Guillermo del Toro’s iteration of the gothic story. Jacob Elordi stars as the monstrous Creature, and looks unrecognizable due to heavy prosthetic makeup.
It took the actor 10 hours to get into the look of the Creature every time, but Elordi has no qualms about it. Instead, he has called the process ‘liberating.’ During a recent interview with Deadline, the actor stated that during the 10-hour process, he got the opportunity to mentally step into his character:
“It was 10 hours to kind of relinquish myself and become this thing that’s other, which was a great relief, really.”
Jacob Elordi talks about how working on Frankenstein was a liberating experience
In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jacob Elordi highlighted that playing a character like the Creature in Frankenstein required incredible focus due to the whole prosthetic makeup process, which eventually helped him in his acting:
“There’s a certain point once the prosthetics go on where they kind of demand that you are The Creature and there’s a level of focus that needs to come to the role.”
At the same time, he also credited director Guillermo del Toro for creating a safe environment on the sets of the film. Revealing how he did not have to get into a dark space to employ method acting for the role, Elordi said:
“Guillermo created such a free set — I hate when people say this, but he really created a safe space, so it was creatively very liberating to be on that set. It wasn’t like this idea everyone has of being Method, which is tortured and suffering and everyone else suffers so you can get a performance. It was a little different to that.”
Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel of the same name and revolves around a scientist who carries out a monstrous experiment, which ends up creating an otherworldly creature. The lore has already been adapted into several films and shows, and Guillermo del Toro has wanted to make his own version of the story for years.
Considering that the director is known for his work in the gothic and dark fantasy genres, audiences have high expectations for the film. Apart from Jacob Elordi, the movie stars Oscar Isaac as the titular scientist.
The rest of the cast includes Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, Felix Kammerer as William, Christoph Waltz as Henrich Harlander, Lars Mikkelsen as Captain Anderson, Burn Gorman as Fritz, Charles Dance as Leopold, and Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe. The official synopsis of the film reads:
“A brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
Frankenstein is going to have a limited theatrical release on October 17, 2025, which will be followed by a wide release on Netflix on November 7, 2025.
