If you are planning to watch Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters, make sure to take some extra popcorn, as the film will be a long journey: 197 minutes long, to be precise. It’s like a wish come true for him, as he wanted the third part that closes the first saga of the franchise to be this long.
He was in a conversation with Collider where he shared this, saying:
"Now it sounds like, ‘Oh, you guys got it down to the lean, mean fighting weight of three hours and [seventeen] minutes. Whoop!’ But it is a process. I went in knowing I was making a three-hour movie. I slipped by [seventeen] minutes; I’m not losing any sleep over that. The goal was to do something epic, to do a saga around this family. We’ve got a lot of character threads that we’re following. I think every thread hits its peak, its moment, that it is meant to happen."
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set for release on December 19, 2025, but it already had a premiere with some members of the press, who praised it.
Avatar: Fire and Ash introduces new clan on Pandora

Although there are several clans in the entire franchise (including video games and books), we have seen only a handful of them on the big screen. That includes the main tribe, Omatikaya, and another major one introduced in Way of Water (2022), Metkayina.
And now, we are about to see another one coming in. It will be called the Mangkwan clan, and its members go by Ash People. We don’t know much about them, but they have an association with fire, similar to Metkayina’s association with water.
While the two films had some intense action, this time the threat seems to be a lot bigger. Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, who is the leader of the Ash People, will lead them in a war on Pandora.
Add the last two films’ main antagonist, General Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who will try to strike the iron while it’s hot and is still hell-bent on taking revenge on Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Only two other James Cameron films are over 3 hours long other than Avatar: Fire and Ash
James Cameron usually goes to great lengths when making films, but he doesn’t usually make films of this length. However, aside from Avatar: Fire and Ash, he has made two more films that run for over three hours.
The first one came in 1997, one of the greatest films ever made, Titanic (1997), about which people still debate, especially those funny conversations where they think Rose could’ve easily saved Jack. Poor Jack.
And the second one is the prequel to Avatar: Fire and Ash, Way of Water, which was more about Sully’s family.
Interestingly, both these films have made over a couple of billion dollars at the global box office. Similar is expected of his upcoming film.
