Recently, rumors swirled on the internet that The Batman Part II script was due for submission on Monday, June 23, 2025. This was sourced from the online news portal Puck, which stated the long-awaited sequel to Matt Reeves' 2022's The Batman would've completed its scripting phase. However, it seems that this is just a rumor.
This was confirmed by DC Studios Co-CEO and Superman director James Gunn himself. A fan asked the director on Threads if the rumor that The Batman Part II's completed script was due for submission on June 23, 2025, was indeed true. To this, Gunn responded, saying that the studio hasn't received the script, probably hinting that it is still under work.
What is the status of The Batman Part II script?
On Monday, June 23, 2025, a fan asked James Gunn if DC Studios had finally received the completed script of The Batman Part II, as Puck suggested last week. Gunn, who is one of the most active studio chiefs on social media, responded:
"It's not true."
Thus, it seems for now, the wait for The Batman Part II seems long as the script is still being worked on. But it is also worth noting that Gunn has been very supportive of Matt Reeves.
James Gunn defends Matt Reeves despite the delayed script for The Batman Part II:
The first movie in Matt Reeves' franchise, The Batman released back in March 2022. Since then, we got the follow-up in the form of The Penguin in 2024, which set up the stage for Part II. But since then, Matt Reeves has been working on the script for the sequel to Robert Pattinson's Batman. This has fans antsy for information on the sequel, as it has been three years since the first movie, and not a single frame has been shot.
However, despite the long delay, James Gunn has only defended Matt Reeves' right to work on the script at his own pace. The first time Gunn addressed the status of the movie was during his June 17, 2025, Rolling Stone interview, where Gunn addressed the frequent rumor that the Matt Reeves sequel is cancelled:
"I’ll also say Batman Part II is not canceled. That’s the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It’s not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he’s doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man."
Just two days later, Gunn sat down for another interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he was asked about the sequel to Pattinson's Batman. His response was:
"Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question. People should get off Matt's n**s because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does."
As of now, The Batman Part II is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027. It was initially scheduled for a 2025 release, then delayed to 2026, and then it was further pushed a year later.
