James Gunn’s Superman sets up the stage for the second season of Peacemaker, scheduled to premiere in August 2025. The season will take place after the events of the film.
Gunn’s film centers around the son of Krypton fighting Lex Luthor. Yet, he doesn’t do it all on his own. Apart from Lois Lane and Mister Terrific, he gets help from his trusty and adorable dog, Krypto. The trailers had already introduced the character as a part of Superman’s journey, but the film puts him in an even more important role than was anticipated.
In line with this, ScreenRant asked James Gunn whether he has a bigger arc planned for Krypto. It led them to discuss the narrative direction of the DCU and the film’s connection to Peacemaker.
When asked about the potential of a big event in the DCU’s future, Gunn teased a surprising character taking up a prominent role in the show. Here’s what he said:
"Yeah. Yeah. And it's not what anyone thinks. It's not what anyone would guess. But I think that if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they'll see where a lot of these things are going and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen."
Gunn hinted that viewers will witness a big event in the show’s upcoming season. However, according to Gunn, it won’t be related to a character they imagine it to be about.
The Peacemaker Season 2 will carry forward the DCU after the events in Superman
Superman place in Metropolis, nearly thirty years after the human population had been introduced to god-like superhumans like Superman. It shows the son of Krypton fighting the threat of Lex Luthor while protecting the people of Jarhanpur from the invading forces of Bolivia.
For this job, he receives help from the Justice Gang, comprised of Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern’s Guy Gardner.
The super-trio was brought together by tech billionaire businessman Maxwell Lord. In the film, he makes a cameo shortly before the final moments. Apart from him, John Cena briefly appears as Peacemaker Christopher Smith when Superman is busy taking care of Metropolis while preserving his reputation.
The upcoming season is supposed to follow the events of Superman. Its teaser also hints at several surprising developments, including the possibility of a multiverse, as Peacemaker comes face-to-face with his double.
The teaser shows Maxwell Lord interviewing Cena’s hero to be a part of his corporate-sponsored superhuman team.
It will be interesting to see how Peacemaker fits into the equation of these three heroes, who were dealing with their own differences in the movie. Toward the film’s end, Metamorpho also joined the gang to save the people of Jarhanpur. It seemed like he would also be a part of the team. With Peacemaker in the mix, it can be even more thrilling.
During the conversation with ScreenRant, James Gunn also hinted that the new Peacemaker season will focus on an unexpected character from what they have already seen. Viewers will know more when the season starts streaming from August 21 onwards on HBO Max.
