Mortal Kombat 2 writer Jeremy Slater reveals a positive update about the video game adaptation expected to be in theaters in October 2025. It comes nearly four years after the release of the first movie that gave something to look forward to.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, this movie promised something epic and exciting for everyone who loves to watch a fun action flick. It did not receive the finest of critical receptions, but the audiences seemed to have enjoyed it. So, it didn't come as a surprise that the franchise is bringing a new chapter to the screen.
With The Boys star Karl Urban all set to play one of the game's most popular characters, the excitement for Mortal Kombat 2 might be at an all-time high. This is only the second movie within this universe, but Slater seems optimistic about it based on the early screening reactions for his project.
Slater recently spoke with Comicbook.com about the audience's response, and it seems like the movie might just feel like a big pop cultural moment. Here's what he said,
“I’m so excited for people to see the movie. It’s been done for a while. We’ve been waiting for the right release date and waiting for the right window. I have been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame. They were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing and they are loving it. It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. That’s why you get into this business.”
The MCU's tentpole has been one of the biggest achievements of this studio as it offered Marvel fans a big event flick that served as a culmination of over a decade's worth of lore. One of its biggest draws was the big fight in the end, which showed all the heroes coming together to beat the big bad. It seems like Mortal Kombat 2 may have a similarly big fight planned.
Jeremy Slater had a specific approach to bringing the tournament fight in Mortal Kombat 2
The 2021 movie made the fans look forward to a big tournament since Raiden announced his intention to train new warriors against Shang Tsung's threats. Jeremy Slater did not want to waste any more time and make fans wait for a tournament any longer. However, he wanted to approach it in a specific way. Here's what he said,
“I was adamant that we had to have this tournament in the movie. We can’t make people wait for another movie and then be like, ‘Come back for the finale. It was finding a structure to make the tournament as satisfying as you want it to be because this had years of build-up. It’s figuring out who the individual matches are going to be, and which characters you pair off for maximum emotional impact, but also for the most dynamic fights."
He further added,
“I was very cognizant of that — that we need to be telling a story on the margins where there is just as much exciting stuff happening outside of the tournament as inside of the tournament, so you’re never bored and both of these stories are moving the movie forward."
Based on Slater's comments about Mortal Kombat 2, the movie might just be an exciting experience like Marvel's Avengers: Endgame.
Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to be released on October 24, 2025.
