Alison Brie recently weighed in on a topic about the Scream franchise and revealed why she doesn’t like Dewey's death. The horror film series began with Wes Craven’s 1996 film, which introduced the Ghostface killer on a killing rampage. It embraced a campier tone to follow characters who somehow end up being the killer's victims.

In 2011, Alison Brie became a part of this list through the death of her Scream 4 character, Rebecca Walters. Over a decade later, Brie headlines another Horror film, Together, alongside her real-life partner, Dave Franco. To promote this Neon release, the couple appeared on a recent episode of the Shut Up Even podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz. The three started discussing their love for the horror genre in general.

It led them to discuss the Scream franchise and how some characters returned to the series even after seemingly dying in a previous project. That is when Brie spoke about Dewey's death in Scream 5 (2022), who has consistently been a part of the franchise since its inception.

While addressing that "sad" death, she said:

"That was a mistake. Keep the main three. [Laughs]"

Alison Brie's comments about Dewey's death being a mistake might have been made in jest, considering the rest of the conversation. It began with her, Dave Franco, and the host speaking about the horror genre, leading them to discuss the Scream franchise. Franco said that he would like to see Brie reprise her role, as other actors have done so in the past.

The three then discussed how Matthew Lilard is returning to the franchise in the same way. In line with this, Brie said:

"I've heard tonnes of people are coming back. Aren't there like three other people coming back?"

Franco explained that the franchise may not be retconning their fate since they are "coming through flashbacks." Brie followed it by speaking about her issue with the "current era of the Scream franchise." She explained:

"Too many people live. The core four need to die. We killed [Jamie Kennedy's character, Randy Meeks] in Scream 2. [So], we should be down to two of the core four."

The next moment, the host and Franco mentioned Dewey's death, which led Brie to make the earlier comment about it. She followed it with a laugh. That was likely because it sounded like she almost backtracked on her earlier comments. So, more than anything, Brie's comments reflect the deep passion that a fan often has about these franchises.

During this conversation, Brie also addressed her love for Scream 3, saying that she is a "Scream 3 apologist." The host chimed in on why people may not have liked it as much as the rest of the installments:

"I think Scream 3 is an outlier from the other five because it's not really as camp. It's a different genre."

Brie added how it felt like "high camp" by how Wes Craven's approach differed from the rest of the projects.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco's Together is in cinemas now.
