Peter Parker wasn't shown as an uber-rich capitalist with tonnes of generational wealth or a mythological god. He was living with his Aunt (Marisa Tomei) and studied at a local high school.

The MCU movies may not have specifically said whether he belonged to the working class, but he surely wasn't well-off. So, the Delmar's Deli job might be his way to earn a living. Unlike before, he can't depend on Aunt May. She can't help him with his emotional or financial needs. That's likely what may have made him look for a job in this grocery store.

It may also have to do with the fact that he can't be around those he holds close to his heart. Neither MJ (Zendaya) nor Ned (Jacob Batalon) might remember him as Peter anymore. Other than that, in the new movie, Peter studies in college and not high school. So, he might be looking for financial independence, as he didn't do so before.
