James Gunn surprised fans by announcing Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to Superman, on September 3, 2025. The title of the Superman follow-up is one of the many nicknames in the comics, in addition to the "Man of Steel." This nickname hints at the Man of Steel's status as a symbol of a better tomorrow. While it has been just two days since the announcement, fans have already started speculating about the plot.

The DCU seems to be growing with Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2, and the upcoming Man of Tomorrow. We see Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor being sent to Belle Reve prison. Many believe that the sequel will follow David Corenswet's Man of Steel doing something unexpected: teaming up with his mortal enemy, Lex Luthor.

According to fans, an external threat will force Superman and Lex Luthor to collaborate in Man of Tomorrow:

As mentioned earlier, James Gunn announced the follow-up to Superman, Man of Tomorrow, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. He posted an image featuring Kal-El and Lex Luthor in his battle armor. Luthor's battle armor is one of the most iconic aspects of the DC lore that movies featuring Lex have been trying to adapt for decades.

We finally got that armor in Superman & Lois Season 4 as Michael Cudlitz's Lex Luthor battled Tyler Hoechlin's Man of Steel. Thus, based on the image above, it seems that Man of Tomorrow might feature Luthor in the battle armor, as the Jim Lee artwork suggests. If the artwork is to be believed, we may also see a surprising collaboration between the Last Son of Krypton and Luthor.

Some believe that the android supervillain from the planet Colu will set his sights on Earth. This invasion will force Superman to do the unthinkable and team up with Lex Luthor to thwart the threat of Brainiac's invasion in the sequel. But there is one thing that has fans excited about the Luthor-Superman team-up.

Fans believe that Man of Tomorrow will feature a specific moment from All-Star Superman:

The twenty-year-old All-Star Superman comic has cemented its status as one of the most iconic storylines featuring the Man of Steel. The comic follows the Big Blue Boy Scout in his last days, as the first issue reveals that the hero is dying because of overexposure to the yellow sun. One of the best issues in this 12-issue series is the fifth one, as Clark interviews Luthor.

As the supervillain Parasite, who is also imprisoned, breaks loose, we see Luthor protect Clark, and the latter secretly uses his superpowers without anyone's notice. After managing to subdue Parasite, Luthor surprisingly reveals that he is fond of Clark Kent for his humanity. James Gunn already used a cover from All-Star Superman#1. Many believe that this scene will play out in the follow-up to Superman.

What do we know about the sequel?

We know very little about the sequel, as we don't have any footage, as cameras haven't started rolling on it. But the announcement image shows the battle armor, and thus it may be featured in the sequel. But there is a bit of a discrepancy between this new announcement and what Gunn had been stating for the past few months.

Initially, he insisted that the next DCU project featuring David Corenswet's Big Blue Boy Scout would not be a direct sequel. But the title "Man of Tomorrow" suggests otherwise. Therefore, the title may also suggest that the movie will see Superman collaborate with not only Luthor but also Supergirl, Lobo, and the rest of the Justice Gang.

By the end of the sequel, we may see how James Gunn and Peter Safran are assembling the puzzle that is the DCU Justice League.

What do you think about these fan theories regarding Man of Tomorrow? As we wait for the sequel, Superman is available to rent on digital platforms.
