Celine Song's second feature, Materialists, is becoming a critical hit, with Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer showing an 87% score. Popcornmeter is also decent with a 70% score. Other than that, the film has received a B- rating on the polling website CinemaScore. It was released alongside How to Train Your Dragon, which currently holds an A rating.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' consensus reads,
"A mature deconstruction of the conventional rom-com, Materialists provides its trio of swoon-worthy stars some of their meatiest material yet while reaffirming Celine Song as a modern master of relationship dramas."
Metacritic also shows the movie with generally favorable reviews, with a 70 metascore based on critical ratings and a 6.2 score based on user ratings. Going by the latter, it's 64% positive while 18% negative.
The film stars Chris Evans, Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and more. A24 is distributing it in the US, while Sony Pictures Releasing International is in charge of its global distribution.
How Materialists competes with others on CinemaScore

Only Materialists and How to Train Your Dragon are the new releases available on the CinemaScore list. The rest were released recently, during the past few weeks.
For the B-category, it's Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega-led horror comedy Death of a Unicorn and the latest Wes Anderson flick, The Phoenician Scheme. The former has an average reception and follows a father and daughter duo who are on vacation with the former's boss. It, however, becomes nightmarish despite featuring an angelic character like a unicorn. The latter film is an espionage dark comedy and follows Zsa-Zsa Korda, played by the brilliant Benicio del Toro.
For the B+ category, it's The Amateur, Bring Her Back, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and A Minecraft Movie.
A Minecraft Movie is currently 2025's second-highest-grossing movie in the world and the highest-grossing movie in the United States. Above it is Chinese Ne Zha 2, which smashed records upon release and has earned $1.8 billion globally. Additionally, A Minecraft Movie has a better Popcornmeter score than Tomatometer.
Final Destination Bloodlines, on the other hand, has some juicy Tomatometer and Popcornmeter scores of 92% and 87%, respectively. It is also one of the highest-grossing movies of this year and currently sits at number 8 on that list, according to Box Office Mojo. The film has earned $260.6 million globally.
A Working Man, Shadow Force, and Dangerous Animals are there at CinemaScore with a B rating.
For A-listers, Seong-ho Jang's animated Christian film King of Kings is the only one to hold the A+ score.
Next is with an A score, which includes The Last Rodeo, Lilo & Stitch, and Sinners.
Sinners is certainly one of the cinematic visuals that arrived this year, which also marks the fifth collaboration between Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler.
Finally, for A-, the list includes The Accountant 2, Ballerina, Karate Kid: Legends, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Thunderbolts (now The New Avengers), and Warfare. The last one in this list is said to be the most realistic depiction of a battle.
