Matt Reeves shares his excitement for The Batman 2 as he arrives at the 77th Emmys ceremony as executive producer behind The Penguin, starring Collin Farrell as the titular Batman villain.

Farrell first played this part in Reeves' 2022 neo-noir film, which introduced Robert Pattinson as Gotham's vigilante billionaire. The film also presented Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred. However, since starting the renewed Batman franchise within the DC universe, it didn't receive a sequel for almost five years.

The sequel was delayed for several reasons, but fans kept asking for a follow-up with Pattinson returning to don his batsuit. Finally, in June 2025, Reeves handed over a script for The Batman 2, putting everyone's worries to rest. Since then, James Gunn revealed that this film will exist in its own universe, separate from the DCU he has been working on.

Reeves spoke about the same script during his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter on the Emmys' red carpet. He shared his enthusiasm about the sequel and shared a detail about Pattinson's character(s), saying:

"The things that it [the script] does to his character, for Batman and for Bruce, I think it has never been done before in this way."

Matt Reeves' The Batman offered a new direction for the Caped Crusader to exist in the DC universe. Reeves relied on his bold stylistic vision, lensed wonderfully by his DP Greig Fraser, to bring a rustic and rugged world of Gotham, representing it as a fertile ground for crime. It didn't give viewers easy villains. Instead, it fleshed out the arcs of its antiheroes.

Despite those probable creative risks for a high-budget blockbuster, the 2022 film earned over $772 million globally, making it a fixture in this superhero universe. It offered a haunting portrait of Bruce Wayne, who was trying to come to terms with his darker side while hoping to help the city get rid of its criminal rot.

That's why Reeves' latest comments about Bruce Wayne and Batman's characters in The Batman 2 seem reassuring to those in awe of its gradual character-building process. Back in January, Reeves spoke just as passionately about the sequel during his time at the Golden Globes ceremony, where he was present as a part of The Penguin team.

At the time, Reeves spoke with Josh Horowitz about the progress with The Batman 2 script and what the story would be about. He noted,

“I think the story is a continuation in a certain way and completely different in another, and it’s gonna show different sides of Rob. [So] it’s going to be really exciting.”

At the Emmys, Reeves shared his excitement about The Batman 2 while also sharing some production-related details about the sequel. He referred to the film's current state of production, saying,

"We're beginning, we're staffing up. We're starting to get our crew back together. We're basically entering prep. We'll be making the movie in the spring. So, [we're] super-excited for the journey that it has taken longer than I wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons, but the most important is getting it to a place where I just felt like it's the best script we could possibly write."

Reeves also spoke about the high-security pouch that The Batman 2 script was delivered in to select members of the cast, including Pattinson, to protect details about the script and hold on to the mystery of its crime procedural tale. He also revealed that Pattinson positively responded to the script and what it does with Bruce Wayne's and Batman's characters.
