Matt Reeves recently finished the script for the highly anticipated sequel, The Batman 2, expected to bring Robert Pattinson back as the Caped Crusader with a new chapter.

The latest reports suggest that the DC studios and Warner Bros. are "thrilled" with Reeves' submitted screenplay. The update comes from a new Variety feature piece that discusses the details of DC's future slate.

The publication reveals that Warner Bros. is more than pleased with the box office results of their recent tentpole project, Superman, helmed by their new co-chief, James Gunn. It has surpassed a significant milestone at the domestic box office, with its opening weekend collection ($125 million) ranking as the third-highest among this year's releases.

While a Superman sequel is reportedly not their priority, Gunn has just shared a poster for Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock. Amid these developments, the studio has also decided to fast-track a "Wonder Woman" movie (per Variety). Considering Gunn and Peter Safran's plans to reboot the DC franchise, Gal Gadot will reportedly not play the lead.

Robert Pattinson is still expected to put on the cape again as the titular Dark Knight in Matt Reeves's upcoming sequel. With the studio's overall satisfaction with Reeves' script, the future of DC seems hopeful.

After Ben Affleck starred as the DCEU's Dark Knight in Zack Snyder's films, Matt Reeves brought Robert Pattinson to play the lead in his 2022 film, The Batman.

The Mickey 17 star was joined by Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James "Jim" Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as the key villain, The Riddler. With this stellar cast, the film received mainly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, earning it an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score.

As the co-writer and director, Matt Reeves painted Batman's world like a grim and gritty neo-noir from the yesteryears. Greig Fraser's striking visuals blended right with the brooding melody of Nirvana's Something in the Way, turning it into a gloomy mood piece.

Thanks to their creative output, the film went on to earn over $772 million at the box office against its reported budget of $200 million. That's why the fans were looking forward to The Batman 2.

What else do we know about Matt Reeves' The Batman 2?

On June 28, 2025, Matt Reeves shared a post on his social media with the draft of the screenplay of The Batman 2. Since then, sources confirmed that Reeves has finished the script, reportedly with co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Only a week before Reeves shared this update, James Gunn spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the growing impatience among fans regarding The Batman 2. He said,

"It's going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay."

Addressing the fans, Gunn also said,

"I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does."

As Gunn mentioned in the interview, the script was finished by the end of June 2025. Hopefully, we will learn more updates about The Batman 2.
