Matt Reeves reveals a hopeful update about The Batman 2, which will offer the next chapter from Gotham City through his vision. It's the second film in the Reeves-verse, which began with his 2022 neo-noir film, The Batman, and continued through a Colin Farrell-starrer spin-off series on HBO Max, dubbed The Penguin.
Considering the love and appreciation for both projects, James Gunn may have decided to let Reeves expand on his vision in parallel to his interconnected DCU story. That's why we'll get to witness Robert Pattinson donning a Bat-suit once again, soon. The sequel will be based on a screenplay that Reeves has written with Mattson Tomlin.
After announcing the end of his scriptwriting process in June, Reeves shares an exciting update about his new film. In a new social media post on Batman Day, Reeves wrote,
"I feel so honored to be preparing to shoot the Next Chapter of our story. This character means so much to me. What a privilege. Can’t wait to share lots of exciting things about the movie with you all in the weeks and months to come… 🦇 Happy #BatmanDay! #TheBatmanEpicCrimeSaga"
Through this caption, Reeves hints that new updates about The Batman 2 will be out in the following weeks or months. So, fans won't have to wait any longer to understand what he is going to bring to the table this time.
Matt Reeves reveals some details about The Batman 2, and who the villain could be
Since the news about The Batman 2 script came out, fans have been eager to know the new villain. Earlier, we saw The Riddler standing against Gotham's Masked Vigilante, while The Penguin and the Falcones remained in the shadows, making their presence felt. In the film's final moments, Barry Keoghan briefly appeared as a prisoner, the Joker.
After that, The Penguin followed the story in a new direction through a deep dive into Oz Perkins and Sofia Falcone's characters. Considering all those parts of the story, it would be interesting to see what new villain/s Reeves brings to The Batman 2. So, Josh Horowitz recently asked Reeves about his creative process in finding the said villain. Here's what Reeves said,
"I had a lot of ideas, and Mattson Tomlin, my writing partner; we began the process of this by doing another deep dive into the comics, exploring the ideas that I've had. He gave me some ideas that he had. [Besides] we sat together, and we watched a lot of movies, honestly, and not all movies that are from, you know, the realm of Gotham, just to explore where this story could go."
He added,
"I knew that the way the [first] movie ended, leaving us on the precipice, and also the events sort of happen within the show, that there is an exploration to be had, and one of the explorations for me was to do something that pushes even further into the character of Bruce Wayne because the first story is so much about The Batman."
On the same note, Reeves revealed that the villain was chosen based on how he affects Bruce Wayne's character and how he is connected to Bruce's past, rather than Batman's. Despite a cryptic response, Reeves offers hope to the fans who want a similarly character-driven, gritty tale as opposed to a shallow spectacle.
For now, fans will have to wait for a while for more updates about The Batman 2.
