Richard Donner's adventure comedy film, The Goonies, was a big part of the 1980s' pop culture. It was cherished by the Gen X generation, who grew up watching it. That's why it holds a special place in their hearts.

Donner's film has been a cultural touchstone in Hollywood, so a majority of its fans can't imagine any project replicating its magical experience. Potsy Ponciroli, who is writing The Goonies sequel, understands their feelings and hopes to honor them through his script, since he also holds the film close to his heart.

During a recent discussion at the Venice Film Festival, he spoke on this topic. Per Deadline, here's what he said,

“I know there’s a lot of ‘do we need a new Goonies,' but I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favourite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me, it was a story that never ended, so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.”

He also shared an optimistic update on the sequel's current status, saying,

“I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft, and I’m about 95% done with that, so we’re moving in the right direction.”

Potsy Ponciroli shared an update on the script for the franchise's second installment. He revealed that they're "moving in the right direction" with the second draft of the screenplay. The filmmaker shared these comments during his recent appearance at the Venice Film Festival, where he was present for his new action thriller, Motor City, headlined by the Reacher star Alan Ritchson, alongside Shailene Woodley.

While Ponciroli reveals an update on the script, Deadline reports that no director has been brought on board for this film. The publication also notes that Warner Bros will back the project, while Steven Spielberg will produce it under his Amblin Entertainment banner along with Holly Bario and Kristie Macosko Krieger, while Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce.

The Home Alone director Chris Columbus, who recently returned with his latest feature directorial, The Thursday Murder Club, will also produce this project. He wrote the script for the 1985 film with Spielberg.

The original film followed a group of misfits on a topsy-turvy adventure against the Fratelli crime family. Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, and Josh Brolin made up the film's central cast.

Brolin, who returned to the limelight through his role in Zach Cregger's Weapons, recently let his feelings known about the sequel during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight.

"I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie has been received so well, generation after generation. It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is]."

Despite his reservations, Brolin believed that if Spielberg approved a script, it must be worth the wait.

"Maybe it could be great. If it's great, you'll know. If Spielberg approves it, you know it's going to be good," Brolin told Entertainment Tonight.

Hopefully, we'll learn more details about the Goonies sequel soon.
