Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul has died at age 60, his representatives confirmed Tuesday.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Aboutboul collapsed on HaBonim Beach in Tel Aviv after swimming. Witnesses said he exited the water and told bystanders he felt unwell before collapsing.
The cause of death has not been released.
Shelly Aloni, CEO of the talent agency that represented him, shared a tribute:
“Alon Aboutboul, a father, a man, an actor, an artist, and above all, our beloved longtime friend, passed away this morning. Alon, I love you.”
Israel’s Minister of Culture and Sport, Miki Zohar, also honored the actor on X:
“I was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing of the actor Alon Aboutboul, may his memory be blessed. Over the years, he portrayed a wide range of characters, bringing depth and emotion to them, leaving a profound mark on Israeli culture.”

International audiences may recognize Alon Aboutboul as Dr. Leonid Pavel in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), a Russian physicist kidnapped by Bane in the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The film grossed over $1 billion globally.
His decades-long career spanned both Israeli and international cinema. He appeared in Rambo III (1988), Body of Lies (2008), and London Has Fallen (2016).
At the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, he co-starred in Septembers of Shiraz with Adrien Brody and Salma Hayek.
On television, Aboutboul had roles in Homeland, Fringe, Snowfall, Twin Peaks, NCIS, The Mentalist, and Hawaii Five-0, proving a versatile presence across both prestige dramas and network staples. He also appeared in the acclaimed shows The Blacklist and Madam Secretary and voiced a character in the highly rated animated series Pantheon.
He won Best Actor at the Jerusalem Film Festival for Out of the Blue and Best Supporting Actor at the 2003 Israeli Film Academy Awards.
Per his IMDb, he was attached to the upcoming film Jacob’s Dream, currently in pre-production.

Born on May 28, 1965, in Kiryat Ata, Israel, Aboutboul made his breakout in Two Fingers from Sidon (1986) and continued working steadily across four decades.
He is survived by his wife, Shir Bilia, and their four children.
