A 2024 podcast interview with actor Lukas Gage has resurfaced after the actor shared new details about the conception of his own sexuality. Before 2024 Coachella, Gage was featured on Seek Treatment, hosted by Catherine Cohen and Pat Regan, where the actor shared his life before coming out and the events that made him accept himself.

In the 2024 interview, Gage discussed his early relationships as well as the several years he had to conceal an aspect for a significant portion of his life. He also explained how one audition transformed his perception of self and led him to take a chance and open himself up to others.

Furthermore, Lukas Gage also clarified that his coming-out was not abrupt. It was a gradual realisation that happened over time with lots of "back and forth". His remarks hint at a time of misconception, uncertainty, and self-development, which is common to most individuals during the process of identity exploration.

Lukas Gage revealed in the interview how the events took place when he was auditioning to play in Sofia Coppola’s intended adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Although the movie never ended up happening, the audition turned out to be a significant life-altering moment for the actor.

According to him, the people auditioning him asked the actor about a "vulnerable thing" that happened to him or a "secret" he had been harbouring. He decided to confess a secret he had held to himself. He said,

“I immediately start bawling, and I talk about how I’m sleeping with my neighbor and hiding it from everybody.”

Lukas Gage added that he was 19 or 20 at the time, and the neighbour was like a 'bro' figure/friend he used to hang out with. Lukas Gage shared how the connection grew over time. They spent time together listening to music and playing video games. He explained,

“After like a month or two, he was like, ‘All right. Well, I’m going to kiss you now.’ And then we dated for three years.”

The relationship ended, but he said they remain on good terms today. That moment at the audition prompted him to call his mother and tell her the truth. He recalled,

"I call my mom and I just start crying… and I tell her, and she was like, 'Shut up. Why are you crying? I'm coming up there right now'."

His mother reacted with support and went to meet him right away. This marked the beginning of his opening up to others.

Lukas Gage said he did not realise he was gay until late in his teens. He dated girls in high school and believed he was straight. He even spoke about one girlfriend who once told him she thought he might be gay. He said,

“She was like, ‘You’re definitely bi, maybe gay.’”

Looking back, he referred to himself as “a deeply conflicted, closeted little troublemaker.” Lukas Gage explained that he moved between wanting attention and feeling insecure. This back-and-forth made the process of accepting himself slower and more confusing.

In 2024, Lukas Gage communicated to the hosts that he was in a period of self-reflection. In addition to spending more time alone, he was also working on himself, revisiting and "deep into The Artist's Way right now."

Lukas Gage recently shared more details about his sexuality while promoting his memoir, I Wrote This for Attention. During his appearance on the In Your Dreams With Owen Thiele podcast, the actor explained that he does not see himself as fully gay or fully straight. He said,

“I’m like 10% straight or 10% bi,” adding that he has hooked up with women and still does at times.

Gage also joked that “the gayest thing about me is I married a man on TV,” referring to his wedding to Chris Appleton on The Kardashians. At the same time, he said the “straightest” thing about him is that he still “gets down with a lady.”

Gage noted that he can be intimate with women but cannot connect emotionally in those relationships, which he says is why they “crashed and burned.”
