The legal tussle between Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni seems to have unfolded in a new direction. As per reports, to halt Baldoni’s legal team’s numerous attempts to seek messages and communication between Taylor Swift and Lively, the Gossip Girl actress’s legal team sought a protective order from the court.
A letter was submitted to Judge Lewis J. Liman on June 13, 2025. This is the same judge who recently quashed the director’s $400 million lawsuit against Blake Lively. In her request to the judge, Lively demanded that Justin Baldoni’s attempt to seek the above-mentioned communication be blocked.
An insider shared a statement with Us Weekly, saying:
“Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer parties are still demanding access to Taylor Swift’s private communications, despite having already subpoenaed and then withdrawn that subpoena after they ‘got all they needed.’”
The director’s legal team had subpoenaed the Cruel Summer singer's communication evidence. However, it was dropped in May 2025. At that time, the singer’s representative shared a statement, saying that she had no direct involvement in the movie It Ends with Us. They added:
“Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift's name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case.”
Meanwhile, in light of the recent events, Blake Lively’s legal team commented that the attempt by Baldoni’s legal team to access the records is only to seek media attention.
What did Blake Lively's team say about Justin Baldoni's move to subpoena Taylor Swift?
According to Us Weekly, Blake Lively's representative explained that Taylor Swift had been dragged into the situation as early as August 2024, based on a crisis PR document that mentioned her and highlighted the importance of her fanbase.
They said the repeated efforts to involve Swift looked like a desperate PR move and were simply a distraction from the fact that all lawsuits filed by Justin Baldoni against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and the other parties involved had already been thrown out.
When the subpoena attempt was quashed, Blake Lively's team shared a statement, saying:
“We are pleased that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties have withdrawn their harassing subpoenas to Taylor Swift and her law firm. We supported the efforts of Taylor’s team to quash these inappropriate subpoenas directed to her counsel and we will continue to stand up for any third party who is unjustly harassed or threatened in the process.”
The statement added that from the beginning, Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer team had been trying to use Taylor Swift’s fame to draw attention to their case. According to them, using her name was part of Melissa Nathan’s original crisis strategy, and that pattern was still ongoing.
However, when they were required to defend themselves in federal court, they backed down. The statement concluded by saying that eventually, they would no longer be able to avoid the real issues, which involved allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation.
