On October 31, rapper and singer Brent Faiyaz released a new single, ‘have to.’
However, at the beginning of the music video, it is mentioned that he planned to release a new album named ICON on September 19, but he changed his mind even though it was already recorded. The message at the beginning of the music video mentioned:
“Brent faiyaz had ICON recorded and scheduled to release on september 19, 2025. The night before, Brent sent us a group text pulling the plug on the album.”
The video then showed a text that he seemingly sent to someone, which read:
“Yo, I'm not dropping ICON tomorrow.”
At that time, the singer had a new single and music video ready but he decided to shelve those two as well. After that, he sent the have to track. The release date for ICON is yet to be announced.
Brent Faiyaz discussed the importance of saying "no" in a 2024 interview
In an interview with Billboard in June 2024, he said that he went to Los Angeles and stayed there for some time. After that, he signed his first publishing deal, which turned out to be a turning point.
Brent Faiyaz mentioned that the moment was also the first time his parents realized that one could make a living by following their passion, which was different from the conventional way of getting jobs. Discussing the freedom of choosing what one wants to do, he said:
“I really like doing what I want to do and then I like being able to say no to things that I don't want to do. The main thing that comes with giving up a piece of your Independence is not being able to say no. It really isn't no deeper than that for me.”
He went on to say:
“So, I think I just want to inspire people to not be okay with being told what to do. You can't grow like that. How you going to grow if the constantly, ‘No no, stay down, stay down.’ So, before people decide they want to do deals and they want to they want to take these large amounts of money and they want to collab with this person that person, I want people to really sit and think about like you feel me. Are they going to be okay with not being able to control the sh*t they want to.”
Brent Faiyaz on labels signing artists
He said that during the beginning days, SoundCloud became a good platform for launching music. However, the change came after streaming platforms came about. Nonetheless, in Brent Faiyaz’s opinion, SoundCloud was more like YouTube. Speaking about how artists are booked by labels, he said:
“Labels ironically want to sign artists who don't need to be signed like it's almost like, ‘We see you already doing well on your own. We see your popularity like now let me jump on a bandwagon and sign you,’ which really don't make no sense so to me. I was just like I see the type of game they playing like it's not really about talent.”
Brent Faiyaz said the signing process was more about the artist’s streaming numbers, shows. However, in his opinion, it should be more about the person’s talent.
