Jon Stewart recently appeared on "The Daily Show" a few days before his scheduled Monday appearance, and gave a response to Donald Trump's comment, where he called Jimmy Kimmel "talentless," during his recent visit to the UK. Fans are now responding in support of Stewart for his satirical take on Trump's remark. One fan took to X (formerly Twitter) and said:
"Brilliant."
According to Variety, all of this arose after it was announced on September 17 that "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" was being suspended following comments Kimmel made on his show regarding Charlie Kirk's assassination. It was announced that Disney which owns ABC Network, was dropping the fan favorite program "for the foreseeable future."
More about Jon Stewart's response to Donald Trump's comment's about Jimmy Kimmel, as fans react to his new skit
The descision to axe the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" has drawn a tsunami of negative reactions, with many criticizing the rampant censorship. Apart from Jon Stewart, fellow late night hosts, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon have also addressed the situation on their shows.
Jon Stewart, however, took a very different approach. Instead of making a direct statement, he adddressed the controversy in a mockumentary style skit. In the skit, the Emmy winning host can be seen playing the role of an obedient presenter who follows the government approved guidelines while hosting his show. In the skit he is seen reffering to Donald Trump as "Our Great Father" and "Dear Leader." He said:
"If you felt a little off these past couple of days, it's probably because our great father has not been home, for father has been gracing England with his legendary warmth and radiance."
In another part of the skit, Jon Stewart can be heard satirically saying:
"Now, some naysayers may argue that Administration’s speech concerns are merely a cynical ploy, a thin gruel of a ruse, a smoke screen to obscure an unprecedented consolidation of power and unitary intimidation; principle-less and coldly antithetical to any experiment in a constitutional republic governance. Some people would say that. Not me, though, I think it’s great.”
Throughout the skit, Jon Stewart never refers to Jimmy Kimmel by name but uses aliases like "Jason Kringle" to describe his situation. He said:
"Even before this ‘Jason Kringle’ situation at ABC, there were plenty of other people in America exercising their free speech incorrectly."
Earlier this week, during a press conference in the UK, Donald Trump was asked about Jimmy Kimmel's suspension. To which he replied, by saying:
"Jimmy Kimmel has bad ratings more than anything else. And he said a horrible thin babout a great gentleman named Charlie Kirk and Jimmy Kimmel is not a talented person and had bad ratings. They should have fired him a long time ago. You can call that speech or not."
Now fans are applauding Jon Stewart's satirical response. This person took to X (formerly Twitter) and said:
"The gilded gold frame of the teleprompter, genius."
Another person said:
"And THAT is how it’s done. 💥"
This fan wrote:
"Jon Stewart is a national treasure. The Daily Show? Thank you. Biggest smile today."
Another added:
"This monologue was brilliant. It's all in the tone. On paper, just reading it without Stewart's mannerisms, expressions, and tone it's completely different. No mention of Kimmel --by actual name."
Jon Stewart's guest on Thursday was journalist Maria Ressa, the 2021 Noble Peace Prize winner, with whom Stewart discussed the ongoing situation regarding censorship.
