“But there’s going to be so much to see” - Sarah Jessica Parker on skipping the 2025 Met Gala

Fashion icon and actress Sarah Jessica Parker made news when it was revealed that she would be giving the 2025 Met Gala a miss. During an interview on May 1, And Just Like That actress revealed that she would not be attending the Met Gala, which took place on May 5.

Parker received an award at the 2nd Annual Cultured Magazine Cult 100 event, which took place at the Guggenheim Museum. When asked by an Entertainment Tonight journalist if she would be gracing the steps of the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art, the venue which hosts the Met Gala, Parker revealed that her work commitments would be preventing her from attending the mega fashion event. She said,

“I have to work…But there’s going to be so much to see and I look forward to seeing what everybody does, and how they interpret the theme and the sort of homework they did for the assignment, a very joyful assignment.”

The theme of this year’s Met Gala was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ and Parker is right to expect attendees’ creative interpretations. Most notably, Rihanna, Zendaya, co-chairs Lewis Hamilton and Colman Domingo stunned audiences with their dapper looks and take on dandyism.

During her conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Parker, while commenting on her appearances on the Met Gala red carpet, said,

“I care a lot about it and I want to try to really honour the work of the curators and everybody who sort of inspired this moment for those of us who get to attend.”

While she may have been unable to attend the 2025 Met Gala, Sarah Jessica Parker has always surpassed expectations with her Met Gala appearances over the years.

Parker’s very first appearance at the Met Gala red carpet 30 years ago in 1995 saw the actress wearing a thrifted long, black dress, as per Elle. According to the news outlet, Parker even did her own hair and makeup for the event, the theme of which was ‘Haute Couture.’

In 2006, Parker attended the Met Gala alongside designer Alexander McQueen, who created complementary looks which featured the duo wearing matching red-and-black tartans in honour of the theme, ‘AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion,’ as per US Weekly.

Parker channeled 70s fashion at the 2019 Met Gala, wearing a shimmering Halston gown. Parker was the designer house’s president and chief creative officer, according to Elle. The outlet notes that the look was Parker’s twist on the theme for that year’s Met Gala, ‘American Women: Fashioning a National Identity.’

While interpreting 2013’s Met Gala theme, ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture,’ Parker wore a mohawk-inspired headpiece by Philip Treacy, as per Vogue. The actress’ striking dress was designed by Giles Deacon, which she paired with thigh-high statement boots.

Parker wore another Philip Treacy headpiece for 2015’s Met Gala, which was centred around the theme, ‘China: Through the Looking Glass.’ US Weekly noted that she wore a custom H&M dress with shoes from her own SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker collection.

Last year, Parker stunned in a Richard Quinn dress resembling an elaborate birdcage and paired it with a statement hat, as per Vogue. Parker’s look was in keeping with 2024’s theme, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,’ channeling a fairytale-like ephemerality.
