Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement may be the talk of pop culture lately, but it briefly turned into the punchline of a college football rivalry.

During the August 28 matchup at Arrowhead Stadium between the University of Nebraska and the University of Cincinnati — Travis Kelce’s alma mater — the Nebraska Huskers shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) that quickly stirred backlash.

The since-deleted image edited the couple’s official engagement photo, replacing Travis Kelce with the school’s mascot, Herbie Husker. Taylor Swift, shown with her hand on his face, appeared on the verge of kissing the cartoon figure.

The caption read simply:

“Change of plans.”

The post disappeared not long after it was uploaded, but not before fans voiced frustration online over the altered photo.

The moment was all the more notable because Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were in attendance at the game, marking their first public appearance since announcing their engagement on August 26.

They were joined in their suite by Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, as well as Travis' brother, Jason.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announce engagement

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce first confirmed their relationship in September 2023, and their engagement announcement, which was shared through a series of photos capturing Kelce’s proposal, was met with an outpouring of congratulations across social media platforms.

In a joint Instagram post — a carousel of photos of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce amidst a flower-laden setup — the couple revealed their engagement, with the Love Story hitmaker writing in the caption:

"Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."

In one of the photos, the NFL player is kneeling while the pop star cups his face. In another image, Kelce has his back turned as he embraces Swift, whose eyes are closed and smiling as she wears the ring.

One photo highlights the couple's clasped hands, emphasizing the ring, which Kelce reportedly had designed with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry. The stunning stone is a "brilliant-cut old mine diamond," softened at the corners and bezel-set in yellow gold.

In the final snippet, Swift and Kelce were sitting closely on a bench under a flowered arch, with the Wildest Dreams hitmaker's legs resting on the Kansas City Chiefs star's thighs.

The engagement follows the songstress' forthcoming album announcement.

Earlier this August, Swift made a special appearance on the New Heights podcast, hosted by her beau and his brother Jason. In the middle of their conversation, Swift pulled out a mint briefcase with the amber-hued text "T.S." written on it.

Then, she told Jason:

"This is my brand new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl.'"

Simultaneously, the pop star revealed the cover image for her 12th studio album on Instagram, where she also revealed the release date.

"And, baby, that’s show business for you. New album The Life of a Showgirl. Out October 3."
