Award-winning French actress Marion Cotillard has announced her separation from director Guillaume Canet after 18 years together. The former couple made a statement announcing their split through the French news agency, Agence France-Presse, as per the Associated Press.
According to the Associated Press, Cotillard and Canet noted that they chose to release a statement to
“avoid all speculation, rumors and risky interpretations.”
In addition, the former couple also stated that their separation came about through “common accord,” and that they part with “mutual goodwill,” noted the Associated Press.

Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet’s relationship, explored
Marion Cotillard, who has starred in prominent films in Hollywood such as opposite Johnny Depp in Public Enemies and with Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception, met Guillaume Canet in 1997, according to The Sunday Times. Canet, who is also an actor, starred alongside Cotillard in Love Me If You Dare in 2003.
Cotillard and Canet began a relationship in 2007, according to People Magazine. The former couple collaborated on a number of films throughout their relationship, such as Little White Lies, Rock'n Roll, and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, all of which Canet directed. Cotillard also starred in Canet’s English-language directorial debut, Blood Ties, which also featured Clive Owen, Mila Kunis, and Zoe Saldana.
Cotillard and Canet, who never married during their 18-year-long relationship, welcomed a son named Marcel in 2011, according to People Magazine. They had another child, a daughter, in 2017.
According to Cotillard herself, who received an Academy award for her role as French singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, she and Canet were very involved in each other’s careers.

While appearing for a conversation with Under the Radar in 2015, Cotillard opened up about the conversations that she had with her partner about her work, and while referring to her role as Lady Macbeth in Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, she said,
“When I accepted my next movie, my boyfriend was like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a fun year.’ I was not supposed to do a movie after the Dardenne brothers’ movie because I was kind of exhausted. And then Justin came with this offer, and I always knew I would play Lady MacBeth, but I thought it would be on stage and in French. I felt, ‘This is an opportunity that I cannot miss.’ Same boyfriend said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Because he knows that I want to do comedies. He’s like, ‘Lady Macbeth? This must be a joke.’”
Cotillard, who starred opposite Brad Pitt in 2016’s Allied, took to social media to discuss her relationship with Canet when multiple media reports claimed that she and Pitt were involved in an alleged affair. In a long post on Instagram, Cotillard wrote,
“This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into. I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.”
Speaking about Canet, Cotillard also announced her second pregnancy and said,
“Many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need.”
In her message, Marion Cotillard also wished the best for Brad Pitt and his then-wife, Angelina Jolie.
